Upgrade Power Mac G5 to Intel Mac?

Hi everyone,

My apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but I figured I'd start here. I was told by tech at a big box retailer that my Power Mac G5 could be upgraded to a Intel Mac by switching out the circuit board. Is that even possible?

thanks,

Jon

No!

The guy is an idiot. The CPU and MOBO would make it to expensive. Upgrades are for PC users. Trust me. The MOBO for the Mac Pro is not cheap nor is the CPU since they use the Xeon counter parts. The RAM on the new Mac Pros would also be DDR3 (Core i7) server RAM. I also think the MOBO form factor might be different. I guess he forgot about that as well.

The Mac Pro has some good benchmarks but you would be best of to get a whole new system.

:violin:

Nope... gotta buy the entire machine. I'm surprised the person was trying to not sell you a new Mac Pro.

Even if you could afford to buy all the guts, The internal design of the new cases are completely different then the G5 cases.

That's like trying to make a U.S. spec Corolla ( or any FWD only car ) all wheel drive. "They have Rally versions of the car, it should fit somehow!" Nope. spare the headaches. Just buy a new 8-core.

;~)

Thanks guys. Well at least I can justify the purchase to my wife.

cheers,

Jon

Maybe or maybe not. She might wonder why you can get nice i7 Quad Core sytem from Dell and HP for a mere $950.00.

There is nothing wrong with a Mac Pro but you guys are getting screwed. Apple should have a decent i7 system with a dedicated graphics card for under $1000.00. You folks need to demand it!

:violin:

The Mac Pro starting at $2499.00? :crybaby:

:badputer:

except that the Mac Pro uses workstation Xeon processors, not desktop i7 processors. If you want desktop prices, get an iMac. you can still edit with FCS on a top end iMac.

If you need the Extreme speed and extreme amounts of RAM, gotta get into the workstation class.

I've been "demanding" a $20000 Porsche Speedster for some time.

All I get is a Kia Soul.

They're just cars. Why does Porsche charge so much for the same thing?

The iMacs are only Dual Core as opposed to Quad Core. The Xeon brand has Dual CPU support and require server RAM. Trust me a Core i7 Dell or HP for $950.00 will kick the snot out of an iMac. Let me see you try to RAID four hard drives in a striped aray with an iMac or better yet run Dual Nvidia cards in SLI mode with an iMac.

Because Porsche uses "Xeon" engines and Kia uses "Core 2 mobile" engines.

;~)

Your post makes no sense. It is HP and Dell that offer the i7 Quad Cores for under a grand while the iMac has Core 2 Dual. Face it your getting screwed. Therer is indeed a sucker born every minute.

:badputer:

Oh o. Things are going to get sucked into another pointless back and forth argument black hole, already overcrowding the net as it is... :~)

Perhaps your right about my processor analogy. It didn't express what I intended. I should have changed that to say "OSX" instead of "Xeon" and "Windows" instead of " Core 2 mobile". Perhaps that would have been more accurate.

There is one serious flaw with that "cheap" dell or hp. They both run Windows software.

This is the Final Cut Pro section after all. And no I don't feel like I'm getting screwed if the alternative is to run Windows. I've been *using* windows since 3.1. I'm pretty familiar with windows, I still provide tech support for a bunch of family & friends on their windows systems.

I've only used Mac's since just before Tiger came out, and frankly, My XP personal machine now sits unattended and neglected because the Mac system does what I want it to. And does it better. And it's easier to troubleshoot. Less headaches. More productivity. I've gotten equally familiar with OSX in the short few years I've worked with it.

Sure it would be great if I could get Mac Pro performance at iMac prices. But the bottom line is that it's not gonna happen. They are not designed for what I need them to do.

So if having less headaches and being more productive means I have to pay a little extra for my "911 GT3" Mac Pro then so be it. I haven't heard anyone ever regret buying one. But I've heard many many people who wish they could buy one. Including me, who gets to use & oversee 4 Clovertown 3.0 Ghz Mac Pros and an Xserve RAID fiber network daily. And not once has my impression of these systems ever been "This is a waste of money". Its more like "These systems are just awesome."

That's really what it comes down to. Being able to buy the best of the best performance, productivity, and reliability wise and not ever regretting it. The whole system is just engineered and built so well. Both in hardware and software.

But of course, nothing is ever going to be perfect.

Your worng once again. Any HP or Dell can run Linux or even OS 2 Warp if you wanted it to. What is with the Windows??????

The iMac is not a highend editing system. It has a high price tag but offers very poor performance. Apple could sell a $950.00 Core i7 systems. They just don't want to offer good systems at an affordable price. You even admit it would be nice just like the other Mac users I talk to. I say demand it!

As far as OS X vs. Windows I like Windows myself. I have a friend with a Mac Pro and he admits he likes my PC better. You can indeed edit video with Vista or XP just as easy as you can with a Mac. This is not a Mac bash just honest critism. My Friend has a Dual Core 2 Dual system and he is thinking about getting a PC since Mac does not offer sub $1000.00 systems that can compete with the PCs. My friend is no Mac zealot. He is just taking an objective look. He is thining about using Vegas or even Premiere in place of FCP. It is all abpout personal choice.

Can FCP even do Blu-Ray yet?

:badputer:

Why does this debate come down to price as if the PC folks were giving some sort of newsflash. Even Microsoft's current silly ad campaign can't come up with anything better than, PC's are cheaper yuk yuk.

Yes a Mac is more expensive- we know this. Yes a PC is a bargain hunters dream and if you compare oranges to oranges you would buy a PC. What does the premium price get you on a Mac? Freedom.

Freedom from bugs, viruses, crashes, blue screen of death, hardware conflicts, etc. Just all of the crapola that has nothing to do with editing and everything to do with the fact that only one company makes Macs. As a result every possible hardware configuration is thoroughly tested with the software and it just works. With PCs anyone can bolt together a PC and as a result there is simply no mathematically plausible way to actually test every potential combo. So yes you are saving money, but is your time worth that savings when the chips are really down? I guess that's the answer you go with...

Hey ... I have 7 Macs and 7 PCs and guess which ones are 100% working with no repairs .... anybody ? The Macs. OS upgrades are cheap. You can get a bulk licensing for less than $200.00. A single OS is not that expensive either. Macs cost more because they put this thing called "quality" in the design. Why do you think everyone out there is trying to mimic the iPhone. That is a great phone and I don't even have one. I am stuck with a suck butt Treo. I have never had a problem with drivers because Mac OS uses more of a Unix code. There must be some reason why most of the Fortune 500 companies use Unix ... maybe because it works. And if you really want to get me going ... FireWire STILL RULES!. Multiple USB devices end up needing a hub and power supply. I never had that problem with Daisy Chaining Firewire devices.

My son-in-law has been thru three PCs (and he is only 23yo). He hates MS and PC's. My friends finally took the plunge and now there is no coming back. One was a IT person (Internet Tech) and networking person who will not go back. He laughs when he remembers all of the hard times he gave me for being a Mac Addict!.

Anyways ... we all have our likings. Yes I wish they could make Macs at the price point of PC but then it would have less quality inside. I mean ... look at the MacBook Pro which is Milled out of aluminum.

And resale value ... wow its great. I sold a three year old PowerBook G4 for 50% less than what I bought it for original and it was used at that time. My MacBook Pro is a beast and it is going on its third year and I cannot tell it.

Rock on Mac! Keep the technology in the fast lane and move over Microsoft.

Anyone remember how difficult it is to get rid of a program that keeps crashing your Windows computer? Let me see if I remember how it goes ... throw the application in the folder and empty trash. Now get ready for all of the "are you sure you want to do that" pop ups. And what about those "this file is being shared by another program are you sure you want to proceed?". I have no idea what to do. I am so worried I am going to mess up a Windows computer that I just let it do its own death rather than throw something away.

Wow ... sorry to rant ... back to making some money on my trusty Apple. And by the way ... the laptop just started showing a weak battery after 3.5 years of age. eBay here I come as I need a battery. But it could be worse, I could be looking for another Windows PC.

Your worng once again. Any HP or Dell can run Linux or even OS 2 Warp if you wanted it to. What is with the Windows??????

You missed the part where I said it this was the FINAL CUT PRO section of the forum. Last time I checked final cut was designed for, and only runs on OSX. That right there is kinda the bottom line of this entire thread which you've now hijacked and turned into a Mac Vs PC argument. The other computer options are pointless if they can't run FCP. And that should be the end of the story. That is what I meant by the Biggest Flaw of those Dell's and HP's were that they run windows. I then state why I choose the OSX system over Windows. I'm not a noob, I know about the other non-linear options out there. I choose FCP and OSX. Otherwise I wouldn't be in the "FCP" forum section.

Now we, in the FCP thread, like to compare which Mac system is best for Final Cut Pro software productivity.

If you don't want to use a mac, buy what you want and be happy about it!! Don't try to force your religion to other cultures. It's really is a mute effort. This thread was not asking the question about which kind of software is "best". We were already past that point and decided on FCP long long ago. We are happy with what we use. We have our reasons for choosing Mac just as you have reasons not to. Fine. It's a free country. Just let it be.

No kidding. iMac is not designed for pro users isn't that what I already said? Big surprise. Yet, it still is quite capable of running Final Cut Pro if you really wanted to. the latest iMacs can match the performance of PowerMacs just a few years ago. Not everyone needs high speed RAIDS. FW800 drives are fast enough for most formats. If a Mac Pro is not in one's budget, An iMac is certainly not unusable by any means. If deadlines and workloads don't require the best of the best, an iMac will work just fine.

You talk as if Apple will never put i7s in their systems. I'm sure they will wind up in iMacs eventually. But right now hardly any consumer market software benefits from Multi-Core processors. So from an Apple perspective, what's the point of popping in Quad i7s if they won't benefit the target market audience as of right now? Pro Apps users generally need as much speed as they can get. FCS does utilize multi core chips. (with huge improvements in that dept on the near horizon )So for that market Apple does indeed provide.

Can FCP even do Blu-Ray yet?

As I said nothing will ever be perfect.

I just would rather deal with the Apple shortfalls then the Windows/PC shortfalls.

I can assure and my friend can assure you that my PC nor his PC has any bugs or viruses. I will admit there are more viruses for the PC but I do not have my editing system hooked up to the internet nor would I want.

The Dual Quad Mac Pro is not a bad system nor is the price. You Apple user just need to be honest and admit that Apple does need a good sub $1000.00 system. Instead you dopes just try to bash the PC with retarded comments. Would I be using a PC if it constanly crashed?????? Would my friend think about getting a new PC over a Mac if that were the case?????? Don't be a dope! Just be honest. PCs work just fine.

The the first iPhone was a joke campared to the Samsung A900 with all the Sprint Power Vision options. The new iPhones now have a lot of thing becuase of the 3G network. In my opinion the first incarnation of the iPhone was a major flop.

Fire Wire????????????????????

I am confused here. I dont use USB for anything other than a jump drive. I have 4 SATA drive stripe in my PC. I also have a hot swapable SATA bay. Fire Wire/USB drive all cost more than the internal SATA drive.

Fire Wire:violin:

Why wouldn't you just choose to remove the software using Windows remove software options? I don'y think putting it into a folder an deleting will get rid of all the exe or ini files.

Jon...

Back on topic, if you can, buy it from an Apple Store. They're usually very helpful and the prices are on par with what you'll find anywhere else that's legitimate. Apple doesn't allow much markdown among its authorized dealers.

Get your RAM from Other World Computing (http://eshop.macsales.com/). Excellent prices. Fast service. And if something's wrong they'll take care of it as fast as possible. There's a buyer's guide on their website to help you find the right parts.

Last year I switched from a Dual 2.5 GHz to an 8-core Mac Pro and was totally impressed with the speed difference. After Effects is up to 8 times faster. So is Compressor. And Color becomes a much more usable application.

I have nothing against Mac or Apple although many Mac users I know do wish they made good workstation for less than $2000.00. I think I am hearing this form most of you as well. I am not trying to push anything on any of you. I gave honest critism and instead of just accpeting it many of you had to go down a very childish path of Mac=Cadilac and PC=Volkswagon althoguh there is no truth or logic behind the statement.

Keep I mind this thread was about upgrading an old G5 system not a FCP thread. Since I have built well over 100 system I would like to think my statements are valid. I am not trying to be rude just being honest.

I could say my Friends Mac starts on fire everytime he boots it up but why would I want to lie about?

Why would you folks want to imply the Mac is a Cadilac and the PC is a Volkswagon?

PCs and Macs both work. One is not better than the other. It is indeed personal choice. I like the Windows OS more than OS X but I also enjoy the fact that we can get Quad Cores for under a grand.

I think from this day forward you folks we be able to accept that fact that PCs do offer more bang for the buck rather than asume they are just plain junk.

:)

I never said you could not edit video using FCP on an iMac or even a Mac Mini. I could indeed edit video with a 2.6 GHZ Pentium 4 but I would rather use 2.6 GHZ Quad Core.

Like I said. The Dual Quad Mac Pro is a nice deal. It offers a good bang for the buck.
