Upgrade from Screenblast to Vegas 5

Hi all,

First, thank you all for the great information in this forum! Lots of useful (and some over my head) information here.

So here's my question: I captured and edited a project in Screenblast a couple of months ago (prior to my purchasing Vegas). I now have Vegas up and running, and imported the Screenblast project and it came over apparently seamlessly (boy was I surprised!) My question (bet you never thought I'd get around to it) is, is there any reason I should recapture and re-edit my project in Vegas? The reason I ask is that I need to make a few changes to it and now would be the time if I am going to get better quality as a result.

Any help is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!

Phil

I don't think I get it -- you opened the Screenblast project in Vegas, but want to know if you should chuck that and re-edit in Screenblast?

If it opened in Vegas with no problems, I can't imagine why you'd want to go back to Screenblast.

You certainly don't have to recapture anything. I think the two programs (which have identical cores anyway) use the same capture program.

Maybe I didn't understand the question.

Hi David,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Let me clarify -- I was wondering about re-editing it in Vegas rather than Screenblast. Already it appears to my untrained eye that the rendering in Vegas is better than Screenblast, so I was wondering if the capture program in Vegas was better than Screenblast too.

Thanks again!

Ah. Like I said, I think it's the same one.

As long as you got all your 1s an 0s, you're fine. Did you see anything that worried you?

Re: Upgrade from Screenblast to Vegas 5

If you can open a Screenblast project in Vegas couldn't you just do any final adjustments on the project in Vegas and render it out from Vegas? You're still dealing with the same source media.

It sounds like you're asking if you should start over with your project from the beginning. Recapturing your video won't make any difference as either program (along with any other DV-able NLE) will capture video exactly as it was recorded onto the dv tape. There is no compression, etc. applied during capture. I don't believe that rendering quality is any different either as, like David mentioned, they both are built off the same core (Screenblast is pretty much a feature-limited version of Vegas).

Yeah, that's the question: was the Screenblast stuff captured through firewire? If so, it should be just as high quality as anything Vegas would capture. I think Jive's right...

Re: Upgrade from Screenblast to Vegas 5

Thanks for all of the quick replies. Sounds like I can just move forward. The original capture was DV/Firewire, so I'm just gonna move forward. Good to hear that Screenblast and Vegas are so similar, because Screenblast was really easy for me to learn and use. Thanks again all!

Re: Upgrade from Screenblast to Vegas 5

Well, Screenblast is a watered-down (and watered-down and watered-down -- OK, enough with the spritzer) version of Vegas, so you'll have everything you had before, and lots, lots more.
