Updating FCP

Quick question -

If I update FCP from 5 to 6 - will my old project files still be OK and openable with new FCP? Just wanted to make sure.. thanks all.

Opening FCP5 projects should open without incident in FCP6.

But once they're converted, they cannot be opened again in FCP5

curious what kind of problems you've run into?
ive have had issues with color, but im guessing its because its a newer apple app.

Rook - I too, would be interested to hear what problems you've experienced with the newer versions of the software. I've upgraded from 4 to 4.5 to 5.x to 6 without any problems (other than having an older version of FxFactory installed which took away my Log & Transfer functionality).

Maybe if you share some of your problems and issues, the community could help you resolve them.

To name a few:

Working with mixed format timelines is a total disaster. At times media gets scrambled. When you need to adjust the clip the media does not reference the proper timecode on the clip and then leaves me with a clip in the timeline with the correct audio but video from somewhere else in the source clip. When it does work, render times are a joke.

(irritating especially because this new feature was the reason I had to upgrade)

Working with the HVX200 has become a painful experience as they have changed the organization of things. Even finding the import now moved and now no longer works at all for me (running 6.0.3) and I can't access any HVX material.

Yet my system running 5.1.4 still works fine with P2 material.

Capturing from an canon XH-A1 is useless. A total disaster. FCP puts timecode breaks EVERYWHERE even though they do not exist on the tape and refuses to capture parts of the media until I go back to the tape and try 4-5 times. Seeing as it breaks a 20min clip into about 10 bits that don't seam together (parts are missing inbetween the imaginary timecode breaks) fixing these can mean 1/2 a day's work.

Compressor is even more ridiculous now IMHO. They have made it less intuitive and less user friendly. Felt like I was learning from scratch. Not to mention it has not added more compressing options to get a better looking video.

And don't even get me started on DVD studio pro.....

I agree w/ rook---DO NOT UPGRADE until your project is complete!!! Way too many issues, Rook listed them. Be patient, finish your current project on 5.1.4 and then upgrade w/ a clean slate!!

Except for the change from "import p2 volume" to the menu command "log and transfer," nothing has changed.

From what I've seen here and at other discussion forums, 6.x is hardly a "painful" experience for the posts I've seen.

If you have the first version of FXFactory installed, that created an import issue with FCP 6.x.

The remedy is as simple as either updating the FXFactory or uninstalling it.

We done a bunch of replicated discs with the HVX200, FCP 6.x, and DVD SP 4.x without any issues.

But I would venture that 6.x is worth every dime for most.

against my will, i had to upgrade mid-several projects
fortunatly i havent noticed any issues

...yet

but i agree, its wise only to update when projects are finished!

I honestly wish i could figure it out because I can't get HVX material to work at all.

I uninstalled all the noise industry stuff I had. Hated it all anyway. And I still can't get p2 material to register.

All I can say is that FCP has a lot of weird bugs that surface with different users. The probs I have right now with capturing Xh-A1 material has led tears.

I try to look at software as someone else's art project and expect problems but after paying 1500 for the package and then 600 for the upgrade I feel I am owed something that fixes the problems instead of just changing them.

That said, the red workflow is working well overhere.

If you've exhausted all the typical fixes (permissions, preferences, etc.,) it might be time to nuke the system drive and install everything from scratch. A few months ago we migrated 13 editors from 5.1.4 to 6.x.x pretty painlessly. We mix and match HDV (1080i and 720p), DV, XDCAM EX, DVCPro HD 720p60 and Animation (our GFX) frequently and haven't experienced the kinds of problems you are seeing. We have no problems capturing from P2 cards or SxS cards either.

Bad RAM is known to cause a host of seemingly random problems.

I've been praying I don't need to fresh instal but it looks like that may be the only answer.

Is there a way to test ram?
