Update on the Genesis...

100% correct. The genesis is 400 on paper per Panavision which means the F35 is higher then that. The F35 gives you 12bit 4:4:4.. the genesis is 10bit 4:4:4. The dynamic range of the genesis is pretty much on par with the F900 as its tech was modeled around that camera. F35 is better than Genesis by a landslide. No contest.

You frequently update your signature...what happened to the Genesis? Gone?

Hard times ahead. Hang in there everyone. Difficult to not have a reason to sell a camera these days.

I heard he actually sold it back to Panavision. They decided they were going to be doing a new joint project (like they did with Red) once they realized they could just epoxy a new sensor in there.

It's going to be the Panavision Millenium DXLG² 0.5 . Expect more info to be released by Maine Wood Concepts, Inc. - the parent organization of Gorilla Glue. They are hoping this is a start to a new long term bond with the filmmaking community - one that unites us all together.

Also, if the mods could get this thread stickied, because of the new info, that would be great.

Ok that was good haha. Honestly, I feel like if you can figure out a way to get over an obstacle and "jerry rig" something that makes things work for you, why not? People do it to cars all the time, why should cameras or any other tool be different. We can be pioneers in our own right for our own things.

Loosing my job due to coronavirus was a small part of why I let it go. The big reason was, the kid who ended up buying it from me had just as much of a passion in Panavision equipment as I do. I honestly sold it mostly out of selflessness. He had the means to carry my modifications through and I wanted to give someone who has never in their life owned a camera as nice as an F900 or Varicam or Genesis/F35 a shot at one. I sold him the camera and my SRW and my Panavision LUT box for next to nothing. Financially I took the largest hit in my life with a piece of gear, but sometimes its not about that. Its giving someone less fortunate the chance to work with something that was once the best camera around. Thats what I think in part this indie and hobby film community should be about. Helping each other when we can and give them chances some otherwise couldnt get unless they had buckets full of cash. Take all that as you will, but thats why. In times like this even more so, we need to be kinder to each other and unite. :)

Oh I definitely agree about the jerry rigging of stuff. I've had some "pioneering" rigging over the years, especially because I hate having the buy the exact thing I need to make something work, knowing that the resale value is going to be 75% of what I paid for it - if I'm lucky - and technology changes might make the resale price crater.

I just recently used packing tape to attach a 2 pound anamorphic adapter to a lens, mainly to see what kind of image it made before having a part machined for it.

I'm sorry to hear you took a loss, but I'm glad to hear it went to a good home. Besides, who wants to own Panavision? You gotta get to a place where you can rent something that Dan Sasaki whipped up for your unique tastes, right? :)

I honestly sold it mostly out In times like this even more so, we need to be kinder to each other and unite. :)

A bond stronger than J-B Weld, indeed.

That clown is in Hong Kong/China. And it's just a shell, from the looks of the pictures. And a shell that's had the ever loving F*** beat out of it. It wouldn't even make a good doorstop.

Speaking of cars, my fake Shelby Cobra is gathering dust waiting for a battery. I told it last fall I won't get it a battery until next month. So it went flat on one tire in protest.

There were a few water damaged Genesis on eBay a few years ago, sparked a bit of debate on this site.

I remember that! I imagine there will be more genesis bodies popping up in due time. Esp with Covid going on. In times of mass despair is when some interesting pieces of gear pop their heads out on Ebay. I remember in 2008 when the market crashed, I saw a Panavision HD900F WITH a Digital Primo Zoom on Ebay for 30 grand or so... crazy...

I think anything Panavision for sale is either stolen or was recovered from the dumpsters where they intentionally “decommission” their gear. The only thing panavision that would be for sale would be t-shirts or hats- even then, those are given away for free lol.

At Woodland Hills they generally shred decomissioned gear to avoid just this happening. I think most of the equipment that has turned up in private collections came from the satellite locations where things are looser.

There's a great photo of a dumpster behind the Woodland Hills office full of various Panaflex film camera bodies. They were mostly shells, all the useful guts having been previously pulled from them, but it was still a startling and depressing sight.

I would love to see this photo if you can track it down mitch! It really is crazy how they go about letting go of old gear. I agree with charles though, all the gear has to be from international or satellite locations.
