update needed for 32gb p2?

I just bought the hvx with a 16gb p2 a month ago. I was wondering, will this camera need a software update to run a 32gb p2 card, or if it runs 16gb is it set to run the 32gb card?

*also, if I shoot to a firestore can I dump directly into an external HDD without using a laptop (will it format a HDD)? (like the way you can dump p2 cards directly from the hvx to a external HDD)

You won't need the P2 firmware update if your camera already supports 16GB P2 cards. The upgrade was needed because the original SD card spec only supported 2GB addresses, so P2 was limited to 8GB.
I don't know about running a firestore, but I'd check the manual.
 
My guess is you won't NEED a firmware update until 256GB cards come out, which may be never. The SDHC spec supports 32GB cards, so you in theory the current firmware supports a 128GB P2 card already. If I'm still using this camera when 256GB cards came out, I guess it was a pretty good investment. :)
 
thanks for the info Prof. looked at the firestore manual online and didn't find anything about direct dump to an external HDD... :(
