So far the only workaround for the capture problem is to upgrade to Final Cut 5.x or downgrade to 10.4.8. Has anyone found a solution that allows 4.5 to capture with 10.4.9?

I'm not sure what the lesson is here as I understand that those with G4's do not have the problem using the same os update and fcp version. It just doesn't make sense to provide an update that, without notice, sabotages their own "pro" application on their most expensive machines. Or does it?

nope - but these kinds of things are to be expected if you don't update your apps for a couple of years...

I HIGHLY doubt that Apple "sabotaged" their own software. This isn't only an Apple issue. If you update ANY operating system to the most current version, VERY OLD software tends not to work. Look at Windows as well. Stuff working on XP doesn't under Vista. Stuff that worked under Windows ME, doesn't with XP.

If you are using old software (talking 3 year old software here) than don't update to the latest and greatest OS. If things aren't broke, don't fix it.

I mean you gotta love capitalism, but they could have tooted the horn before they automatic update truck ran me over in the middle of project.

Oh yeah, it was the warning that said: "Even though everyone of the prior updates made your machine more efficient and more reliable, this one is a crap shoot. It may well cripple your pro applications and/or cause catastrophic hardware failure. Press OK to continue?"

You should never upgrade anything in the middle of a project. You're just asking for trouble.
I finished my current project and installed 10.4.9. Tested it out and I'm ready to start a new project with it.

There's never any guarantees that a project won't get screwed up with any update.

I see there are also some problems with Lacie external drives not mounting after installing 10.4.9. Wouldn't it be a hoot if all this commotion was because 10.4.9 caused spotlight to reindex?

Yes, a very basic principle: never, ever, ever, upgrade/downgrade or change your software/hardware in the middle of a project unless you have no way of avoiding it.

That said, Apple really should at least test their own applications for problems before releasing OS updates.

There are some who are having success by unchecking report dropped frames during playback and abort capture on dropped frames in user preferences. They are claiming no problems logging and capturing or getting any interruptions.... But I am concerned about dropped frames affecting the quality of the final project. Is there anyone on this list who captures without a net (no warning or about on dropped frames)?

The fix has been pointed out. Reinstall 10.4.8.

You expect Apple to test EVERY SINGLE version of every single application they have with every OS update?

You just need to realize that if you want the latest and greatest OS, that you should get the latest and greatest version of the Apple apps. If the old application worked with an older OS, why the heck would you update?

And I never said they issued a warning. Only that you always need to proceed with caution. Don't update until you are sure it is cool to do so. And as we said over and over...NEVER mid project.

Thanks for your help but I am not ready to accept the fact that the added security in 10.4.9 is dependent on the capturing ability of FCP 4.5. In these situations I do have faith in the intelligent masses. Assuming that the bug wasn't intentional I am confident that a work-around will be found, or Apple has a whoops department that is hard at work on this issue. Remember, this is the same company that provides Classic 9 support despite the fact that it has been over a decade since it was introduced.
