Ive done a search before posting this and can't see anything on it.

Is this coming for the 7Q?

Up to 240 FPS 4K to HD unlimited recording?

Thanks

Im pretty sure their stance on the matter was that they would not rule it our per say, but it's very doubtful that it'll happen, simply because the processing power needed for such a feature is pretty extreme. After all, the Odyssey can't "even" handle 240fps at 4K, so they'd have to enable that first. Then they'd have to find a way to make processing room for doing the encoding to prores or whichever HD format they might choose. In short, I wouldn't hold my breath.

This has nothing to do with the 7Q. The FS700 itself can't do 240FPS at 4k; and the SDI port can't handle that much data. So, no.

The fastest 4k option on the FS700 is 120FPS, and that's to the onboard RAM, not the SDI port. (The 7Q can then offload and record it after shooting.) The fastest continuous option is 60 FPS.

Suppose you could shoot at 2k and then just bring it to HD in post, is there not a lot of alaising in 2K tho?

Odyssey7Q records the fastest outputs of the FS700 in RAW:
4K continuous to 60p
4K burst to 120p
2K continuous to 240p

For RAW converted to HD and recorded as Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), we currently accept the 4K RAW and can record it up to 60p continuously.

We do intend to see if we can accept 2K RAW at faster frame rates and turn this into HD Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) recordings. No promises at this time but we believe we can offer something that will be useful to clients.

As for the 2K to HD, to get from 2048x1080 to 1920x1080 we would simply eliminate the extra material from the sides of the frame. On the FS700 you need to be in RAW to ever see this anyway.

Any plans to just use the full DCI aspect ratio in modes other than raw? It doesn't seem useful to crop any of the image except if people really for some reason cant do that crop in post, which seems unlikely. I'd rather just always record the full 2048 or 4096 frame width and have to crop in post than always the cropped UHD/HD. I imagine others might agree. Obviously both options would be useful but if we get only one, why make it the one that forces you to throw out pixels?

Then again if throwing out those pixels is what gives you enough processing power to do 240fps prores or 4k/UHD prores I'm for it.

In time we plan to offer both options. For now most people have told us they wanted video-release-ready material from this function, which means 16x9.

Thanks Mitch for the replies, great having you on here and keeping everyone in the loop when it comes to 7Q stuff.

Where do you ask people this - is it a small set of customers? Or do you do larger surveys across all of your customer base? Just wondering.

Personally, I prefer the extra resolution of 4K or 2K, but most clients seem to prefer a 16:9 HD aspect ratio because clients generally want it as easy as possible.

It varies depending on the issues at hand. We are constantly gathering information, even if the clients don't realize we're doing it.
