a friend of mine has 2 dvx100s. he wants to upgrade his DVX and get a wide angle, and a 35 mill adaptor. but i was tellin him to just say screw that and buy a HVX.

can anyone actually help with facts/points?

Both have great cine gamma

Both will give you a true 24p

One performs better in low light (DVX)

One is Hi Def with Variable Frame Rates and a tapeless work flow.

I love the DVX, I did 4 or 5 shorts on it before my latest 4 or 5 on HD and it really is apples and oranges in terms of resolution and quality when you see the stuff on hi def large monitors or projected on large screens. I would not be as happy with my shorts that I have in festivals now if they were DVX. Right now i feel like the image is not compromised in any way.

And no - uprezzed DVX is not the same thing.

What about an HMC150 and a 35mm adapter. Same or cheaper than an HVX. Plus the cost of media will never be am issue.

That's the route I'd go for your budget, no question. You don't get variable frame rate but your stuff is hi-def.

There was a fantastic Documentary at Slamdance Called Zombie Girl. Tons of awards, tons of festivals, very popular. It's hangup to getting distro, shot on older SD cams.

If you have commercial aspirations for your work, or ever hope to get anything picked up or sold, especially a year or two from now, I'd get into HD.

Three of my shorts, all HD, are about to sell.

So the draw backs for the HMC150 vs the 200a or 170 are no varialbel frame rate, poorer color space (but still a step up from the DVX), and a clunkier (at present) workflow. Finally DVCproHD, what the HVX shoots, is a more professionally accepted codec. The only dealbreaker is if you are working with someone that demands that codec.

The plusses of the HMC150 over the 200a or 170. Cheaper. Recoding media Waaaaaay Cheaper. So much so it's almost free. We're talking hours of 1080 hidef on a 32gb SD card, vs less than half an hour on 32gb's of p2 which will cost thaousands of dollars. I think it's better in low light too.

The plusses of the HMC150 over DVX100. Better color space. HI DEF! Tapeless workflow. More minutes of footage than even DVX on tape and even cheaper media. So the big thing is HD and for the price of the HVX alone you can get into a HMC150, 35mm, and maybe even a wide angle and it will def. be a step up from the DVX.

The HMC is wider than the DVX. It's 28mm equivalent vs 32.5mm for the DVX.

Also, it's worst in low light. It's better (if you shoot in progressive with both). I compared my DVX100 (original) versus the HMC both with open at medium telephoto and the DVX image is clearly darker.

Probably a DVX100b should be closer to the HMC, but I also noticed that the HMC has less noise than the DVX100. But my tests are not really scientifics!
