F3: Untitled documentary project

Hello. I used to have an account here but rarely used it and forgot all its info so please excuse me. I made another to post some frames of the new doc. feature I was hired onto, thinking someone might be interested in more examples of work being done on this camera.

I decided to once again shoot with the F3 in Log mode. I really like this camera for many reasons. It's far from perfect but for the budget I determined it was way beyond any alternatives I could come up with. Unfortunately this film is also being shot with lesser, compact cameras but I can not comment on that part of it other than to say my footage will likely stick out, greatly. I assume the color grade will injure the F3 shots to better match the SLR stuff. This is what happens on many projects like this where 100's of hours of footage is gathered by 3-4 different camera people that are hired onto long doc projects at different times, sometimes months or even a year+ apart. I do not like that fact and worry about my name being associated with the less experienced people hired as fill-ins but, what can you do.

This was all shot S-log to internal SD cards via an adapter. I use Extreme Sandisk cards without issue. The lens is mostly a 17-55 Nikon. I prefer to use primes or a better lens usually but this was the best we could do for a rental in this case. The camera is set up for handheld use with a Zacuto uni. plate, 16" carbon fiber rods and a quickly removable zac shoulder pad. I will try to post a pic of a rig if anyone is interested. We also rented an Alphatron VF which is ok I guess; it works but it's very bulky and heavy with the larger Sony batt.

Quickly, these are random grabs from footage gathered in different parts (some very remote) of West Va. USA. The protest shots were shot at 1600asa. All shots are natural/found light. The baby shot may have some motion blur due to it moving a lot!

These are all s-log grabs and are not color graded.

Lovely stuff! The protest stuff looks great, and the wide-angle interviews are unique sort of look.

That 17-55mm is a dog for focussing on video work, but there's nothing wrong with the glass!

Thanks for the comment. Noise is there in those shadows but after reading how "Parts Unknown" for CNN is mostly shot F3 to xdcam I figured it's good enough for us too. Xdcam seems to work great and i keep faces around 35-50 when possible. I use the internal marker/meter for all exposure and watch skies with zebras set to about 104% I think.

A doc. like this is impossible to shoot to any heavier codec simply due to budget, time and space for editing. Some days over 150gb is put onto the drives. I regularly fill up a 64gb card in one day, but sometimes just a 32. A few times I turned in about 200gb for a day. Tonight the guy with the B-roll GH3 rig used up a 128gb card, plus a 16, plus a 32 I think. Try doing that over 1.5 months (so far) with a codec that uses more space!

The next time I am going to spec out the PL mount "GL Optics" Sigma T1.8 18-35 for the walk-around and interview stuff Im doing. This Nikon is a messy hassle and about as opposite a cine lens as can be. The MTF FZ to Nikon adapter isn't that great either, but it's all cheap and works, I suppose. I really need a T2 lens to feel comfortable though. I also put up a 35mm T1.5 Rokinon when I need to push low light situations and for a few interviews so far.

I have to say that the DR on the F3 is critical to have available. As a shoulder mount camera, it works so much better than any franken rig I have ever seen. The editor is getting more and more worried about how much better my footage is looking than the DSLR B-roll stuff.

I'm only mentioning this because sharing info is the only way to gauge our workflows. As an F3 owner I shot a doc. last year with the Ki Pro to 10bit ProRes HQ, so I was recording about 64GB/hour, figure 180Gig/day. Which at the time sounded like a lot.

I'm currently shooting a feature doc. in 3D with Red Epic rigs x 2 (four cameras) at 48fps and going through about 3 TB/day.

Hey thanks for the comment Hunter. I wish I could do this with that F35 you have, or had, but it is working well for this show. After 6 weeks of constant filming, I can say the camera choice worked out very well.

Wow Bill, that 3D workflow would really be something to deal with. I had wanted to use one of the new Odysseys on this shoot but still, the extra bulk, battery and benefits wouldn't be worth it for me considering the sheer amount of run and gun, very different set-ups, which are sometimes a few seconds apart, and overall length of this particular doc.. I hope to on the next shoot which is a music video, or maybe use an F55 for the internal 10bit, not that I think it would have made much difference on this particular film.

Here is the handheld rig I was able to throw together. Production had bought a very cheesy shoulder rig and I stole only the handles and slid them onto my new carbon rods. They work and only slip a little.

Some more grabs. This was my first time using a camera that got great exposure values on faces with just single candles, and with a 2.8 lens. The Power plant with house shot was soft because I opened up a Rokinon all the way. At 1.5 it wasn't so great but in motion it looks fine. Again the interviews are all natural light. The shot with the red curtains was very close to overexposure but the S-log held it somehow. I had to open up to get his face to 30-35% and boosted mids slightly in fcp for this grab. There wasn't much bounce light coming in his other window but it worked out.
