Unsupported lens

I recently loaned my F3 and a few lenses to a friend for a test shoot. My PL mounted Canon FD300 f2.8 lens was used and as it subsequently turns out, it was not used with the rail mounted lens support that I provided with the kit.

Could this have caused strain on the camera's mount? Would it be good advice to have the camera mount and flange depth checked ? Otoh, I have noticed other PMW-F3 users shooting with heavy lenses unsupported for short periods.

This is not a problem at all. Its a setting in the menu that was changed to look for Cooke/i or Arri lens data. You can simply turn this on or off. Your Canon lens doesn't have any lens data points, there for its going to read as an unsupported lens. Just turn this off and that will go away. There is nothing wrong with the camera.

Someone else on here can help you find the menu list. Its in your manual, I remember its on the bottom of the first menu list. "Lens info" and it should say C A or off I believe. Put it to Off

And hello and welcome to DVXUser!

I think he's talking not about the error message, but about physical tweaking of the lens mount.

I'd put on some lenses that you know are shimmed correctly and see if they're marks come up right...if they do, then you're alright enough to work. If not, then there you go.

Another easy way to see is if an 18mm comes up at infinity wide open in focus. Or even wider lens, if you have one.

The 300mm f2.8 is pretty heavy as you know, You can get away with not using lens support for a while but leaving it on for hours may cause some damage.

The easy check is what Nate said, get the widest lens you can set wide open to infinity, If there is uneven softness on one part of the frame (top or bottom for example) there may be damage. But again, your f3 probably is fine- the mount is very well built.

Ah I see, reading this over again I now understand what he was saying, the error message us the same, so thats what threw me off. Sorry about that.
