Unsqueezing an image- help plz

Hi guys,

(I'm posting this again in this thread, after posting in the DVX100 board, this issue might relate to both, and is urgent)
I shot my latest film using the DVX100, at 24p, in a SQUEEZE mode.
I edited in FCP on a NTSC-DV Anamorphic time line, and exported to QT.

I have a problem showing the footage in class now, since the teacher claims it looks "fat", and asks me to 'unsqueeze' the footage (so it can be shown on a 4:3 platform).

Any idea how to unsqueeze it?

-should I just export again, but this time at a 4:3?

Thanks!
Liron.

well..

1) who's the idiot? You or your teacher?

2) Create a new 4:3 sequence and drop it in. If it still looks letterbox (5.+ will do this, 4.5- won't) then twirl down the DISTORT arrow in the MOTION tab and change ASPECT to 33.33, 0 or -33.33. One of those will fill the window.

But again... who's the one who is wrong?

Thanks for the advice. There's no need however, to insult...it's the first time I'm using the Squeeze mode, and am learning by doing. Will try the 4:3 sequence suggestion. Thanks :)

Not an insult you bloody fool!!

Good LORD don't people know proper f'n ENGLISH anymore???

Crap to you all!

Yes, thank you!! I found this thread on another area of the forum and that REALLY ticked me off too. Double posting is a no no... especially when you don't go back and reference out the other post.

Bad form.

Made me think I wasted time with you.

Listen man, I have to turn in the project in two days, so I figured this might relate both to people who know FCP, and people who know DVX100, one does not have to entail the other. Point taken though. I'm trying all the suggestions above, so far none seems to work.

Hey man,

I'm no pro but I've had the "fat" problem exporting to Quicktime you've got.
Export to Compressor and just check 16:9 in the inspector.
Works everytime for me.

BTW, I think the captain needs a little R&R.
Seems like he's just screaming at everybody these days.
I know repeating yourself can be frustrating but man you're coming across as a real hothead.
Not cool.
Maybe give yourself a little Captain time and relax.

Indeed Poco. This forced move from CA to OH is ticking me off worse some days than others.

I thought of that answer the first time I posted... but 16:9 squeezed to 4:3 would look THIN, not FAT. How this whole thing started is beyond me. That's why this person should explain themselves... so we aren't here just guessing at the wind.

Poco... had a thought...

What if this kid has a DVX100B model!!!!

WHAT if this kid switched his LCD to WIDESCREEN???

What if he forgot to change the camera's MENU settings to SQUEEZE!!!

That would give him the problem he's seeing. Then, the TEACHER would be correct.

Man, I'd love to see a screenshot of the qt file.

Why doesn't my suggestion work? What is happening?

Don't complain, EXplain!!

It's a FCP and a user issue. Knowing that anamorphic IS squeezed is half the battle, yes? Has nothing to do with the camera. If you shot squeezed that's all there is.

CaptM

I watched your video, and that really helped!
I did what you suggested- changed the aspect ratio and rescaled- it works.
Thanks, I appreciate your help!

No, I shot Squeeze all the way through (my cam. op. did actually).
oh, and btw, I'm a 27 y. woman, not a 'kid'.

Hey -- 27 is REALLY a kid in my world!! Puppies, all of you!!

~Shane... Military transfer. Heading away from the left coast. ugh.

Glad it worked for you -- still... why (WHY!!!) did the prof think it looked squished and fat people?

You know, I have no idea still what she's talking about, I went seeing her today, and watched the footage, it does look a little stretched (laterally), but that's probably because it's played on a 4:3 computer screen ?? It might also be due to some kind of a corrupted file, since she told me she couldn't copy/paste it to her (and several others..) computers. I dunno, I'm trying to learn from this as much as possible though.
Anyways, I turned in the 4:3 version, and it looks fine.
I think I might revisit my clip / sequence settings though, just to make sure everything is in anamorphic mode...

Oh, and as one who was in the service (Israel though...) I can relate to the transfer thing...hopefully you like your new place :)

Thanks. Not going to be California... but it will still be a new adventure. Plus, drivable to both family's, my wife and mine. AND... the boys are happy too (now that I think about all the good things) all THEY want is a house with a second story.

Mike

Hey Capt, I'm sure you won't have a problem finding a 2 story house in Ohio.....there's tons of them for sale. Ohio is also super cheap compared to San Fran. I'm also moving to Ohio soon. What area are they sending you to?
