My First Short Shot With A DVX

Well, I recently purchased a DVX100B and love it. Before, I was shooting shorts with my Digi8 camera. So, I shot this short with my DVX and I know I messed up on a lot of things, like white balancing correctly and setting the color temperature and what not, but I thought I'd post anyway. I'd love it if you guys gave me some tips for my next shoot. :) (PS It's a pretty big file, so Save Target As...)

Wow, this short was really original. I loved that one angle when he dropped the coins in. Not the greatest WB but you said it yourself. Cover the windows and get better lighting. Maybe even try using flood lights if you have nothing else. Its not as good as pro lighting but its a nice alternative. Your continuity isnt really the greatest. There's little things i noticed that were off. Another thing, clear ur set of people. I noticed the one kid in the kitchen. But this is a nice start with dvx's. I loved the end. I hope to see more from you soon

theres a shadow of the camera man in the shot where hes walking through the street and picks up the coin. nice idea though, how he spent all the money he saved to buy a bigger piggie bank. haha

I think that instead of him pulling out a piggy bank out of the bag it should have been a DVX..

I think doing that would have raised the budget about 3000$. lol
I liked it for a first offering, was that a Warwick Thumb bass I saw in there?

Dude, you got some really good instincts on comedic shots! Nice work! Some lighting issues and editing issues, but I enjoyed watching it... keep shooting!

Looked good only errors I caught was someone in the background in the house and the camera man and someone else in the background shadows in one of the outside shots. I liked it overall... keep shooting!!

Take all your mistakes and correct them, get some lighting, and maybe a tripod. There is potential all over this short, and keep things like your gigantic shadow in mind while shooting.

Great, great job. Like everyone else said, keep working on the lighting and little mistakes like shadows.

However, that was a very very original idea. I've been hanging around this forum for almost a year now and many times people get carried away with the technical side of things. I would much rather watch your short than a perfectly executed 35mm adapter video that has an uninteresting story.

Keep us posted on your next projects and keep coming up with those great ideas.

PS: Have you submitted this to festivals and things like IFC? Because I think that you'd have some good results in festivals even if you did mess up on some technical things.

Nah, not yet. I'm planning on entering in some stuff, wasn't too sure if I should though because of the bad lighting.

Nice work, really enjoyed it. Great pacing, sequencing and music. Funny story too. As someone else stated the lighting could use a little work but overall a good showing!

That was fun to watch! I did notice the kids shoes magically appeared when he went outside and disappeared when he went back inside in the beginning. That wasn't intentional, was it? I also noticed the lighting issues everyone else noticed, but overall great start! Keep up the good work!

hey man,
cool concept and all in all a nice little short you got here.

it was well told.

now for things it noticed:
you should definitely buy a lighting kit and read some books or post on lighting. It makes a world of difference. I've seen it already mentioned, but the shadows on the street shot. Small production things of that sort. And also some audio work. I felt that all the dialogue was either too quite or something else was a bit off. Did you use the onboard mic or an off-camera mic?

you're definitely on to something.

keep us all posted.

loved it! great timing and variety of shots. perfect music.

agreed about lighting, some slightly jerky camera movements etc.
