"Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

I thought I'd post a few preliminary frame grabs from a music video I'm working on.  So far we've shot for two days and I'm planning on another couple of days to finish the shooting.  I had a great crew, including some DVXUsers helping me out (Jerry XCheck, Kitsu, and Gabe Uhr).  I 've done some preliminary color grading, but at this point I'm still experimenting with some different looks.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

Looks interesting… I’m looking forward to see the final work.
Just watch out for the third grab, it could potentially look “too indie” because of the illumination and color of the bg.

This was my first real shoot with any sort of crew and careful planning, and I must say I enjoyed it. Here's looking forward to seeing the final piece.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

That first shot with the graffiti in the background is very cool. It gives the impression that she has wings.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

Hello there Barry!
I had a great time working with you and meeting all the different folks that you gathered to work on the location shoot. Looks like you have a great starting point for the project and if I can be of help in anyway...please let me know. I've got experience with Premeire Pro, After Effects, Encore, ProTools, Audition, Nuendo, Photoshop and am literate on both the mac and PC platform.

Unfortunately I will be in rehearsals for "A Christmas Carol" during the days you have set aside for picking up additional footage. But if I can help out somewhere along the line...I'll do my best to accomodate schedule wise.

Good luck on the cut. Again, it was great to work with you and meet everyone who was on set during the shoot on friday.

My public e-mail address is joseph_a_booth_ii@hotmail.com if anyone from that day wants to get in touch with me. Or if you already have my private e-mail...feel free to drop a line.

Looking forward to seeing your final product on DVD! Too cool!!!

Have a great day!

Sincere Regards,
Joseph

Looks good Barry
I would like to do a music video somday
I Use to be in radio... and would like to branch out.
Looks fun.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

That DOES look like wings! Well of course, the shot was planned exactly like that, righ Barry? :P <cough>

Cool grabs. Yeah, we had some issues with not enough room to put highlights on Jenee's hair and face for the house interior shots. The third grab shows that...

I love the shot with the added graffiti (is that JerryX on the right? :o ). The sillhoutte shot looks great, and the last shots is simply as sweet as Jenee herself.

Barry, it was great to work with you and the crew. Hope we'll do it again some day.

Cheers!

Jerry

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

did you guys graffiti "DVX crew" on the wall, haha that cracks me up

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

Hehe, no--just Photoshopped all the grafitti onto the wall.

Andrew, Jerry, and Joseph--very nice to work with all of you and I'm sure we'll do future projects together.

Bryster--thanks, just jump in--I've done in-studio music performances and worked on a music doumentary, but this is my first real music video.

Hans--thanks I thought that myself about the "wings', it was Jerry on Glidecam doing the "flying" ;D

Roman--lol, the 3rd grab has some carefully done soft lighting with two softboxes and a fresnel, and I was reluctant to give it the bleach bypass effect of desaturated color and increased contrast I used on many of the other shots, but maybe I need to reconsider.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

except for the last couple of shots, everything looked very live and un-set up like. maybe that's the look you were going for but it looks too videoish. that's just my A#$hole statement.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

my favorite is 3rd..just like the oldschool feel to it and the grain is very fine as well. The others look pretty ordinary to me. Keep up good work. :)

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

Hmm, maybe you're reacting to the bleach bypass/desaturated look I've been trying out in the grading. The artist just saw the stills and she thought her makeup looked pale in some of the shots. I think the look really comes across in the real footage, but I'm still experimenting. Here are a couple of the shots that are close to what came out of the camera.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

For stills, I prefer the more saturated color, but saying something looks like video without seeing it in motion is an unfair criticism, I think.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

The non-desaturated stills *do* look better. It really is a completely different feel viewing the footage vs. the stills. I'll have to post some clips with different grading and see what people think.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

Ok, enough with being patient....... Where's the finished piece? :)

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

Yeah, Barry, what's your progress? I've been busy working on my doc (I know, I had pre-New Year resolution to have trailer up by New Year :-[), but I am eagerly waiting to see your (our) piece.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

Hey Jerry,

My editing computer has been in pieces for all of last month because of operating system problems and some hardware failures. It's literally taken me 40-50 hours to get everything working again. XP Pro (grrrrrr). On top of that I got really sick around Xmas and am still recovering. So I've finally got my edit station up and running with my apps reinstalled and I've just loaded on the Day 3 footage (shot while you were away). I was just working on the slo-mo flower shot in AE using Twixtor last night.

I'm trying to get a very rough loose edit done this weekend and will forward the link to everyone asap.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

call me crazy, but i like the desaturated shots better, even as stills.

and to follow suit...3rd shot is the only one that stood out flat to me.

Re: "Unreasonable" Music Video Grabs

The one of her infront of the store window looked flat to me. There's just not enough contrast between her and the background. All the others were great. I especially like the composition of her walking by the walls.  The club shots, of her singing, WOW! Nice lighting.

You're a pro Barry. And, as I said before, you're very smart, ...and handsome.

Can't wait to see the final video. Don't forget to make a 56k version (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).
