unlocking the blue scene file settings?

I'm trying to set up 2 cameras. My friend's camera has his knee set at "auto" and mine is at "mid" which I'd like for both cameras. I forgot the trick to unlock blue colored scene file settings. Can someone please tell me how to do this?

I think it would be great to have a list of all the locked up blue colored settings you can get with the camera, plus an explanation of how to unlock these settings. Unfortunately, ways to unlock these settings isn't in the manual and I don't think it's in the DVX book either. Barry Green, this might be a good thing for an updated version of your book, which I think is great.

try to set gamma to normal first.

When a menu item is blue, that means it cannot be adjusted for the given mode you're in. Ulisses is right, you have to change the gamma curve. You probably have one of the cameras on Cine_Like and the other is on something like Cine_Like_V.

There is no way to "unlock" a blue menu item, that item selection just doesn't exist given the current settings of the camera. Like Thin/Mid/Thick -- if you go into "progressive off", the thin/mid/thick option becomes blue, because it cannot be disabled, you're *always* in thick mode when shooting 60i.

If you set all the menu items the same between the cameras, all the same options will be available to you.

Re: unlocking the blue scene file settings?

Thanks for your response to my question. As Ulysses said, I have to set the gamma to "normal" and then I can change the knee. However, without this website I would not know that. This is the kind of thing you just have to know or remember, because it's not in the books.

Barry, you give another example about "thick, mid, and thin." Yes, I understand that also. You can change things that are blue by changing a different camera setting. My point is that we can't always remember what settings have to be changed to get something else changed - to get it to not be blue.

I think it would be great to figure out all the blue settings that can come up, and then have a reference list that explains how to change another setting to change the one that is blue.

So now I know how to reset the "knee" if it's blue, and how to reset the "thin, med, thick" it that is blue. But what if there are other things that show up blue and I get stuck again? And I may forget how to "unblue" the "knee" and the "thin, med, thick" settings in the future. I suppose I'll have to keep my own notes and carry it with the camera.

Re: unlocking the blue scene file settings?

Barry,

In the case of Knee when using Cine_Like gamma, the camera will use the last knee set or an internal default ?

I mean:
gamma=normal
I set the knee
gamma=cine_like (knee will be blue, but showing last setting)
the camera will use the knee setting I left when gamma=normal ?

If not, how dvx is setting knee when gamma is cine_like ?

Thanks,
Ulisses

Re: unlocking the blue scene file settings?

best way is to start by resetting the F# and then try to match them. saves a lot of time.

Re: unlocking the blue scene file settings?

I believe it uses a preset, and not the last setting. I tried to force it into interlace/thin mode, thinking the last setting might "stick", but it doesn't.

Accordingly, for the knee for cine-like, it'd be 105% (because in actuality there is *no* knee attenuation in cine gamma).
