Unknown filmmaker gets $30 million for robot movie

Yikes. I hope he knows what he's doing then. It's one thing to do a great little ditty but, wow.
All I can say is, if he take's the offer, it's Showtime.

//Yep. It appears he took the offer. Hope he's ready.

My expectation here is that the $30mil comes with a writer, cinematographer, set of producers who know what they're doing and various heavy strings to the extent that he, while he probably does have an opinion that matters, will mostly be a marketing gimmick and not so much a director. At least not without a lot of hand holding. Which is fine, just trying to reason out the situation a bit.

It was first reported that he will also write it, that's not true, studio writers will be writing it. From what I can find out it's a marketing gimmick. These experiments backfire about 50% of the time so we will see how it turns out.

Yep. If he's ready it could establish him. If it's premature, it could kill him before he gets started. Risky to say the least concerning his own career anyways. I didn't see a 30 mil check when I watched the video, but who knows.

And if he's smart, it really doesn't matter. After taxes, $30mil is still a ton of money, and if he's from (and presumably still lives in) Uruguay... that probably isn't chump change. If he already is running post-production house in Uruguay as the article states, then he's pretty much set for life if he doesn't do another thing in Hollywood.

I hope the money wasn't a consideration. It's nice if it pays off but I presume there are filemmakers that do it because they love it, and then there are filmakers that, well, cash doesn't hurt. Unless ofcourse, I'm wasting everyone's time again. Stupid me.

I'm sure he's doing it for the love of it and the creative opportunity... Lord knows I would... I'm just saying if he's smart, whether this starts or kills his career he's still set for life :)

I wonder how many people could be sitting in a shi* hole of an apartment, half starving, get offered 30 mil and not sell out? I wonder. I really wonder. I'd stop and think but they'de have to have a good pitch. I'm bad that way. Man, I've starved most of my life and pride is about all I have left. Would I sell? Iffy. I'm a prick in that dept. Just out of spite if anything, at my age.

I don't know man, money is shi* imo. Just leads to bad news.

//Oh yeah. Sorry for wasting everyones time. I'll have to put that in my sig. Just for a 'heads up.'

Heh?

They are not giving him $30M, his deal is for possibly $1M that he could make to co-direct with his hand being held, the studio will control how the money is spent and on what. It's Raimi's movie with him as a marketing guinie pig.

Well he was given a $1 million directors fee. After the movie was made I would take that million and make many more movies with it. If he can do something that got him work for $500 then think of what he could do with that fee. The way I look at it is if I got paid a large sum of money I would put it right back into my craft and make good use of it.
I think it is cool he got noticed online. Just shows how times have changed.

From what I can find out they are not writing him $1M check, he COULD earn up to $1M. He's probably working for next to nothing now and if the movie hits certain numbers he COULD earn up to $1M.

The only thing I can find out is now they are paying for his appartment and small living expenses at this time.

Oops... misread it.

No one here called him a 'sell out' or said there was anything wrong with the situation. We just gave an interpretation of the headline. It's a success no matter how you look at it. Although I don't really see a feature in that short.
