Unknown filmmaker gets $30 million for robot movie

It was, and the post has already been optioned for a tidy, seven-figure sum.

Yea, been there, my 4 party post dated out of state check form the bank of Tiajana (with no ID) cleared BTW, but his check is from a US bank to BEND OVER. The Twighlight kid with the new big P deal knows how this works.

That's a pretty paltry sum to make a VFX heavy film involving giant robots. Transformer cost what, $150 million?

So based on everyone's opinions, all we have to look forward to "if" we make it in Hollywood, is a paltry paycheck, threats of killing our careers, and directorial hand holding?

If that's the current reality for up and coming directors, then I guess focusing on screenwriting over directing sounds like a much better path to me.

Bending over is also a requirement.

I don't doubt for a second that if some exec came to anybody in here with a $1,000,000 check asking you to make their next movie based off your original idea you wouldn't turn it down. I understand the appeal to being completely independent away from Hollywood because that has always been my goal but not everybody goes into the business with that in mind. Some people go into it wanting to work in Hollywood to be a part of the machine. There isn't anything wrong with that because it is a business. Just because they made a deal with the "devil" doesn't mean the film is going to be bad or that the filmmaker is playing roulette. I think it's a cool story about the filmmaker and the bottom line is the filmmaker has a talent with SFX and is making something happen with it.

I would immediately start a thread on dvxuser and ask if anyone knew a good agent and/or entertainment lawyer before I signed anything with a big money company like that :)

Later,
Jason

It doesn't sound like Alvarez is some guy living in a shoddy third-world apartment with a DVX100a and two Britek lights stuffed in a hoopty Nike duffle bag. He's directed a few shorts and could well be one of the top VFX guys in his country. Just because we don't have awareness of him before a week ago doesn't mean anything.

A $1M first-time "unknown" directing deal is uncommon nowadays, but it's a single-picture deal and nothing more. $30M isn't an insane amount of money for a feature - especially with Raimi producing. With CAA behind him, my bet is that he's got a good enough level of protection to see him through it.

BTW, this "Babe in the Woods from Uruguay" is rep'd by: CAA / Anonymous Content (Mgr) / Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein, PC - who represent other unknowns like: Will Ferrell, Jim Carrey, Vince Vaughn, Dane Cook, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Rudd, David Letterman, Nicole Kidman, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Hudson, Sean Connery and Hilary Swank. And... Seth MacFarlane, Jimmy Kimmel, D.L. Hughley, Worldwide Pants, Jonah Hill and Kristen Wiig.

He'll be okay.

Congrats to Fede!!!
I sincerely hope this is the break you need

And to those calling this a gimmick, that's like saying "but the stripper really likes me" Of course it's a gimmick, this is a Hollywood deal, everything is a gimmick! But you start with a gimmick and you move forward, everyone should be so lucky. And if you don't think this is a good thing, then you are allready lucky cause there you are reading my comment while that dude is out there living most of our dream.

I wish him all the best and I think it's great but he is sure not living my dream. Raimi is closer to it though.

I'm curious to see what their future marketing plans turn into for this movie and how much they are going to misrepresent what he actually did for the movie. This can backfire if they are not extremely cautious. Raimi is expecting a Peter Jackson Districk 9 and is going to get a big wake up call (probably not for CGI stuff but everything else), I would have loved to hear thier 1 1/2 hour confrence call on this one before they gave it the go ahead.

I don't want to know how you got them.

That would be a an epic cinematic experience in and of itself. :2vrolijk_08:

I wish I could misrepresent what I was responsible for doing on my awful first couple of films.

I can see him directing the CGI robots and shots but his track record for people/story isn't there.

I hope he makes the next "Titanic" and Hollywood decides this is the gimmick they need and George Lucas decides to hold my hand.

I do want to work in hollywood ! I want the best actors, the huge budgets and the best script writers in the business. Then when I am 80 set my children are set and grandchildren are set for life we can all sit down in my beach house and watch the movie. I will soak it all in and go DAMN that movie is kick ass!
