"University Heights" is a reflection on American life and the struggles that we face everyday. Four lives on a college campus. Four problems seeking answers. A Philosophy teacher owes thousands of dollars to a drug cartel, but the death of his wife destroys him with guilt. A teenager hopes to fall in love, but finds trouble in his drug use. Confused and alone, an English teacher fights his sexuality. Consumed by racism and disgust, a student discovers whom he hates most - himself. An examination of life and the choices we make, "University Heights" grasps the everyday struggles of humanity - finding yourself.

The film was shot in Iowa, in Davenport and Iowa City, and in Rock Island, Illinois. The picture’s budget was only $300, and the cast of over 50 actors features local talent. Even though it hasn’t been released, "University Heights" was chosen as an Official Selection in the 2004 Microcinema Fest in Rapid City, SD, and was invited to the Central Standard Film Festival in Minneapolis.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are two 19-year old filmmakers from Bettendorf, IA. Beck currently attends the University of Iowa, and Woods goes to Scott Community College. The pair has been writing, directing, and producing films together for the past seven years, and formed their production company, Bluebox Limited, in 2001. To date, they have produced 12 shorts and 3 feature length films.

Neither have had formal training in filmmaking, yet have been recognized across the United States. A few of their latest films have received national attention, screening at festivals across the country and winning several awards, including four from the Iowa Motion Picture Association.

In April of 2004, Beck and Woods placed in the Top 50 Director’s competition in the Project Greenlight contest, representing 3% of the total contestants. Project Greenlight was created by Hollywood stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, and is sponsored by Miramax Studios and the Bravo Channel. The top 50 were chosen from over 1,700 candidates, all of which submitted a 3-minute scene to demonstrate directorial talent.
