Universal FF?

A small adapter will be released shortly after for a standard accessory port. Right now it has it's own connection for it's own speed cranks.

Matt,

Thanks!

I look forward to hearing your feedback on the new changes! If you get a chance to do some in-depth testing, can you tape a printed paper millimeter scale to the top edge of the focus marker wheel, and report back how much play is in the new gears?

I will do ! I'll let you know how I get on. At the moment Tim sent my new gearbox out on Wednesday [the same day of purchase], but I found out here in the UK we have a postal strike that looks like its going to stop any kind of deliveries for sometime. Its a Royal Mail pain in the a$%.

I finally saw the 'Art of Pulling Focus' series. That was very cool. It just goes to show how much work goes into maintaining focus between the cameraman, the AC and the actor/actors. Real nice work !

Tim, am waiting for the postal strike to pass and then the new gearbox will be through - I can't wait !!!

Wayne, the new FF is looking real sharpe !!! How long til we see photos of the real thing? What are your lens gears looking like - are they built something like the RedRock style or like the indiFOCUS or something else entirely?

Thanks all,
Richard

Richard,

We are shipping the first 30 unit at the end of this month, so we will take picture before they ship.

We are releasing 3 types of follow focus gear, type 1 is a 'compression' type, but in a different way redrock's style. All will be revealed soon :)

Thanks Wayne, are they all based on 0.8 cinegears? Also are they available to buy seperately?

:)

Thanks
Richard

Matt J's review confirmed my decision to hold back on release of our entire production run of FF unit which arrived here last month! The issue of smoothness under load was of great concern and we decided to scrap the entire lot of them (the gears that is) for a much more advanced design than the standard bevel gears used in the units tested. It also allows proper pre-load for near-zero lash and silky smooth rotation under load. Our price with 5 annodized alumum gears (univeral, for use with SLR lenses) is set at under $700, and with 2 gears, approx. $550. In any case, plenty of great choices will exist very shortly.

I stand to be corrected, but I believe our unit is the only one that is designed to accomodate a low cost remote option for use with jibs and dollies.

I definitely recommend you check out our microFollowFocus (just to go our home page and click on the link). As you can see from the review it's a top-notch performer and for $645 you get lens gears as well. It's the industry-standard film pitch which works with both still and motion picture lenses. Also works great with the Red lenses (just finished testing those)

The team over at Redrock has done an amazing job with this follow focus. The latest release of the gear box has practically NO play it it at all. If there is any play it would be at the 1/64" level, which I do not have anythign that will measure that small. This means that it preforms better then the Chroziel FF which costs 2x as much and has about 1/32" of play in the wheel.

I've also used this follow focus on the RED camera, and it worked great with the lens- the standard pitch on the lens means that this follow focus will travel with you well into the future- beyond your current camera. I've heard that they will eventually be offering a speed crank, but for now, the FF accepts intustry standard speed cranks- so if you get an arri speed crank, it will work perfectly with the Redrock FF.

For more thoughts on the FF you can check out my blog posting:
Redrock Micro Follow Focus

Enjoy! :)
