United 93

And yes, that comment about 9/11 just concerning New York is absolutely horrendous and asine.

Not to mention the big irony: the movie we're talking about tells the story of UNITED 93, which (as I seem to recall) was the plane that went down in Pennsylvania...

And plus the fact that WE, US, The United States of America and men and women from all over the country with families have been at war for the last five years because of these events.

Plus a million other reasons... Jimthejib, you should be banned just for that comment.

Ouch, I'm harsh.

But really, do you think only men and women from New York should be fighting over in Iraq?

Come on, man. Use your brain.

United we stand. United we fall.

Admirable words! I echo what you've said.

9/11 is one of those days I'll never foget - as I am sure is the case with most of you guys. I am not a US citizen, and I'll probably never be, but that day, and its aftermath, made me an American by heart and soul (for too many reasons to name, other than the event itself).

I was watching the morning news at a hotel in Bethesda, MD, when the second plane hit the tower. That delayed my departure for work by enough time that I missed driving by Pentagon around 9:30 - close enough to be too close. But that's not why I am writing this.

If something is missing from our spiritual lives, it's heroes and legends - not of people who lived 2000 years ago, but of people who live here and now. Most of the popular entertainment is so far removed from reality that we can not relate to those characters on a subconscious level. They are not 'one of us'.

The people on flight 93 were 'one of us'. They were the heroes, and they deserve to become a legend. How do you think Odyssey was written? People made a character into a legend by whatever means they had at their disposal. Today we have films, and they don't have to be documentaries, either. In fact, fiction gives a legend a better service.

What's important is that they communicate what our collective psyche needs: the tragedy, the sorrow, the healing, the will to prevail.

I say it's never too soon. I hope (not too high) it won't be cheesy. But whether or not it will be truthful doesn't really matter too much.

Peace!

thanks XCheck. I hope we never forget.

I just watch the trailer and Flight 93 looks really good.

I don't really believe there is a right or a wrong time to make a movie anymore than there is to write book. To me, it is all in how the subject matter is handled. Hopefully, this will be handled tastefully, though I suspect not.

Initially, I had no interest in seeing this movie. Now, however, I am sure I will probably watch it. It is a matter of history. Perhaps coming so soon on the heels of the actual incident we may see a story that adheres to the facts of the incident as we know them rather than being rewritten by historians to fit a social agenda of the current time, whatever that may be. The further we get from the incident, the more selective we are in our memory. It is important to document it while it is still fresh in our minds.

This movie doesn't bother me. I'm actually quite shocked there wasn't a MADE-FOR-TV movie made just 6 months later. Waco had a movie before the event even ended. The earth quake in SF in 89 had a movie within a year. Those events may not have been as tragic but they affected many people. I give the filmmakers a lot of credit for waiting this long.

how did they get to use "United" in the title?

how did they get to use "United" in the title?

I think it was NY1 (TV station in NY), they showed the trailer to people on the street and all but a few walked away before it finished. A few said they'd watch it, almost all said they wouldn't. Hmm.

The United 93 families all cooperated, an important point.

The producers even got to name it "United" which I was shocked at. Totally shocked. In an era where we blur out people's faces, blur out product placement we don't have a right to use, yet they get to name the movie "United 93" using a company's trademarked name. Flight 93 would have worked just as good.

Curious, if anyone sees any interviews where they discuss using United in the title, please let me know.

Or United as one ? Probably.

Why are you so shocked at this ? Are you really shocked ? I'm failing to understand the horror in them naming it United 93.

Maybe because United is a trademarked name.

And ............. ?

Maybe they got permission ? Maybe they can use it as it is a public story ? Maybe they are simply saying United as in ONE ?

-

Still; what's the issue with being shocked (Gasp ! Oh my god !) ?

True... news events and such are usually open for retelling. I wasn't shocked Hudson, I just said that might be what the person who said that may have meant. I think it's a great name, and I am sure they went through all (if they had to) the legal stuff.

Companies as powerful as United Airlines typically have a freaky-feel meltdown over anything that can harm their brand. They require movie producers to blur out or otherwise remove their brand from the scene.

We see this over and over and over in movies and TV.

There have been movies (with company titles in them) critical of companies like Enron, Fox, etc. but nothing like this, (to my knowledge). I wonder if because Flight 93 was already used, they had no choice, or that United didn't want to get in the way and cause even more controversy. Still, wow.

To see a film that will see major release and remind people of the sad fact that United was the airline chosen to commit this horrific act is going to hurt them for a little while. If even one person doesn't book a flight on United, perhaps spooked a little -- and rightfully so -- after seeing this movie, United loses revenue, and really needs it right now.

Does that make more sense to you? :)

I see your point. However, I am not sure people will book a flight based on events that so many people who live here have already seem to have forgotten.

Yeah, I find it hard to believe that people will not book flights on United because of this film. Everybody who won't fly with United because of this already made that decision prior to this movie being made. They made that decision on 9/11. IMHO.

Still, wow.

LOL You're cracking me up.

Sounds a little far fetched.
