Unique Problems in workflow..Computer? Camera?

I have been having some unique problems happening with the workflow from my HVX200 (P2) through Final Cut Studio and onto my Apple Laptop (specs below).

I have researched this problem a bit before and have not found a definite solution yet. When importing via 1394 directly from the camera through "Log and Transfer" in Final Cut Studio, I am receiving the glitch problem you see below.

Many times when I scroll through the preview in Log and Transfer, these glitches will show up, but most times will not be actually imported to the final Quicktimes. BUT, about every 1 out of 7 clips will finalize with this glitch and need to be re-imported. When I re-import this glitch will be moved to a different spot in the clip, but will most likely be eliminated - UNLESS working directly from the contents folder that was already transferred. I drew the conclusion that the glitches in the already transferred contents folder will remain consistant and impossible to eliminate. I have tried many things and researched many forums but cannot put my finger on if it is my computer, camera, hard drive, or a demon in my computer.

PROBLEM 2: (possible connection) This past winter I have gone through 3 hard drives, one of which is brand new. I purchased this computer in Fall of 2008 and have had the below problem numerous times.

Every time I have been able to reformat the hard drive and continue to use it, but this problem keeps reaccuring and I obviously cannot rely on it for work. 3 different hard drives (2 Lacie, 1 WD) and 3 identicle problems.

I have come to wonder if it is my entire firewire port on my computer. I also have a 1 TB WD that has had no problems and it is a USB driven hard drive (knocking on wood). Thank you for reading and I hope we can disucss these things!

Computer specs: 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

The card is dirty or the connection in the camera is dirty. You need to use canned air to clean them both out. This is the result of a clogged connection.

Unfortunately your footage is recorded like that. But clean it out and it won't happen again.

I use FC Express...

I have had problems like this with my DVX100. Unfortunately the heads were dirty during record... so that is the way it will be for ever...

Perhaps you will be luckier...

As a note, I never 'log and transfer' for the DVX. I just never got it to transfer reliably, and it could be because of the use of a 'laptop' rather than a desk machine with more power... I've transfered all of my footage by just playing the DVX, and capturing the entire amount. I also disable stopping on errors, because I'd rather just get the footage, than rewinding tape, retrying, and potentially stretch the tape to uselessness. I'm not worried about frame drop outs, since I'm going to the internet, and could 'edit' around droppouts if need be.

On to hard disk problems...

I once or twice tried to capture from Firewire, to an external Firewire hard drive. The procedure crashed my disk more than once. So, I now only capture to the boot disk, having cleared out 10 or 15 GB to acquire an hour's worth of SD DV footage.

That may have been due to 'old software', like around 2003-2004 or so... but since then I've just made that my standard practice.

I will not consider any camera that uses tape ever, now that there is choice in the matter, relative to using SD cards, and AVC HD or Intra, or P2 (like I could afford them... and the camera too...), or something that has an integral Harddrive.

My dislike for tape spans decads and all manner of tape media...

Thank you for the reply. I also thought about the connection with the P2 and the camera, but these glitches move around when I am importing. In playback on the camera they are not there, it is only when I bring to Log and Transfer when they begin to show up. I then thought it was a dirty Firewire (1394) cable, but have switched cables numerous times and nothing changed. It very well could be the connection from the camera, I will have to try on a different computer.

Hey this has been discussed a bunch here at DVXUser.

It is an FCP thing.

Do you still have the folder you copied your P2 contents into? If so, try saving this folder to a different drive. With FCP it is hazardous to go straight from the P2 card into FCP. Just make sure you're not importing straight from the P2 card. Import your folder using FCPs "Log and Transfer"window.

Holy smokes.

I see that you've encountered just about every P2 hurdle there is.

To be honest, my advice is to start reading the manuals to your products. Apple and Panasonic both make them. Sure there are a few people out there who can get away with not reading up on their gear before using it. But with your questions about white screens and black screens, and pixelated screens... it sounds like you're just plugging things together and expecting them to work like your older camera. There are multiple ways to get perfect footage into FCP and you haven't chosen any way that works yet.

P2 into a Mac, right here on DVXUser:

This is what I have also been told. BUT when I transfer the contents folder onto my computer, then into FCP - these glitches are there to stay. So my only option has been to import directly from the card because I have the chance to re-import the footage from the card.

I did try to give a quick clean to all the connections on the camera and my last import was "glitchless". I will be getting some canned air to make sure, but this may be the problem!?!?

Thanks again.

Transfer Problem

Transfer Problem

I found that I get this "glitch" problem happens for about 5 frames on some of my files that have been transferred to a different hard drive. Random shots will contain sometimes a full screen colorful glitch which probably has never annoyed me so much.

Now I am about to conclude that this problem is inside my firewire (both 600 and 800) ports on my computer. ?

If I were you I'd snag a local pro to help you out. Your situation is so unique, I doubt you'll get much more help online. Hire someone to fix it. And you'll just not have to deal with it anymore. Seriously, everyone who had this problem has already fixed it. And again, there is no such thing as Firewire600. Another reason to snag a local pro.

Luck,
Andrew

Does your firewire cable have a ferrite core attached to it. Page 11 of the HVX manual says, "When using 1394 cable, install a ferrite core on the end nearest the PC." I had all kinds of trouble - similar to yours - capturing to a laptop with firewire until a stuck one of those on a cable. Never needed one with my tower, but my laptop can't live without it.

Here is a picture of one on a cable. It is the funny bump near the end.

(I'm not recommending you purchase one from these guys. They were just the first good example I googled.)
