Kyle,

Thanks for the kind words!

The "iPod" part was shot in front of a greenscreen. I then used Keylight in After Effects to pull a matte, and then the matte choker to get the smooth edges. I used tint to turn the subject pure black, then duplicated this layer and corner pinned it to make a shadow. I then used Render: Ramp to make the shadow fade to the background color.

Kaz,

I agree 100%. You simply must love Milfred Auls and his unique style of music.

Re: Unique Music Video Shot on a 100a

Was that an original song by the two guys in the video? Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I liked the song a LOT. I mean, I would actually buy that song and listen to it. It was funky but melancholy at the same time. I loved the bizarre dancing; it went right along with the music. Let me know if there's a place I can hear more of these guys' stuff.

Re: Unique Music Video Shot on a 100a

It's an original song by the guy with the beard, who is also the lead singer and keyboardist. I've gotten a lot more negative feedback regarding the song than positive, but there's definitely been a vocal minority who found it catchy. The band should be mixing anothing song pretty soon and I may do a video for it as well. I'm glad to hear you like the dancing...I got such a kick out of some of the footage while keying it that I wanted to include it in "non-sillouhette" form, but from the beginning I had planned to use the iPod-ad style dancing, and I think it turned out well in the end, but I'll admit that the raw footage was much funnier, perhaps too much so to fit the song, though.

Re: Unique Music Video Shot on a 100a

Do they have a website or something? I'd really like to know more. Is the bearded guy's name Milfred Auls?

Re: Unique Music Video Shot on a 100a

Alright, I am going with the majority you mentioned in saying that I did not care too much for the music itself.

However, I was extremely impressed... enough to tell my monitor "wow!"... when I saw that effect at the end when they were shadows. Way cool! Anybody out there have an idea how to do it in FCP?

Now let me ask you, in the beginning when it goes from the DVD and backs out, how did you do that? Great job!

Re: Unique Music Video Shot on a 100a

Thanks very much for the compliment on the video.

Unfortunately I don't know Final Cut Pro well enough to say whether or not it's possible to create the shadowed silhouettes with it. I'm pretty sure you could achieve a very similar effect (although a few extra plug ins and photoshop would help), but it might be difficult and convoluted as FCP does not have a great built in keyer. I simply used After Effects for the effects shots because I'm more comfortable with its interface for effects work.

I gave a very brief description earlier in this post of how I made the sillhouettes (greenscreening then making the greenscreened footage black against a solid colored background, basically.)

The CD/DVD player shot was very time consuming to make, but I will explain it as best I can in a few words:
The CD/DVD player was box modelled with subdivision surfaces in 3ds Max and textured in photoshop. The model is pretty simple and was quick to make, but the motion blur masks the simplicity of the model when it is seen at a close distance. I used basic keyframing to move the tray and CD in, as well as to animate the camera. I textured the CD with the last frame of some footage I greenscreened in After Effects, and used trial and error to line the two shots up (then tweaked them in After Effects.) The people on the speakers were greenscreened and added in After Effects. I keyframed their scale and position to match the motion of the speakers. It seems like a lot of work (and it was), but it wasn't as bad as it sounds and the AE and Max work was all relatively basic.

Re: Unique Music Video Shot on a 100a

I think the treatment is nice with an original touch! Maybe I would work on the outdoor sequences a bit more to bring them into the cool viby state of the rest of the shots. Slight colour washing might help! Great work! Great Song!

Re: Unique Music Video Shot on a 100a

Great creativity. I am very impressed with some of the effects you made.

Re: Unique Music Video Shot on a 100a

Hmm not really my type of music but I have to say it is unique. The video was good, nice effects.

Re: Unique Music Video Shot on a 100a

Hey, I loved the single "Use" as well.  Here's the part in the movie where I reveal I am actually a huge music producer, but alas....  And I have to admit, I liked the song more the first few times I heard it, when I thought he was saying, "I want you to do dirty things," not "thirty."  I'm sure your video will involve some multiplying-effect, where we see 30 Milfred heads singing or something.
At any rate, make sure to let me know when their website is up and when they have a full album for sale.  I've seen "Neatz" over 10 times now.

BTW, do YOU, Hockeyfan, have a website?
