Here's part of my demo reel. I have to do a lot more to it...but this is what I've got for now.

Critique please. I already know I broke the 180 rule, and I'm taking that out. Other advice would be appreciated. All DVX100 with a couple Letus35 shots (car intro).

Enjoy!

Pretty pictures, nice colors...good job! Definitely a fan of the performance shot, the greens are nice. Some smooth camerawork, too, nice dollys. I didn't notice any line crossing, but the 180 rule ain't all that...I like to think of it more as a guidline. As long as you don't confuse your audience (unless you wanted to) it's all good, just hide the crossings with camera moves and cutaways.

My personal feelings about the line aside, what I personally feel you might want to work on is composition. The framing on most of these shots is pretty straight on, kinda portrait style...maybe even flat. Try taking a step to the side and incorporating a diagonal element like a path or a row of large objects (stairs, statues, columns), perhaps a rail...tons of possibilities. Something that might help is the rule of thirds (I mean guideline). Basically you cut your frame into thirds both width and length wise. The intersections of the lines separating the thirds are where you want to place points of interest. If you can use something in the frame to connect opposite corners, then you generally end up with a sweet shot. But remember that variety is always good too. Also, keep an eye out for good places to shoot and fill out your reel. Judging from the skyline shots, you get the idea. One last thing...it's a little cutty for a DP reel, might want to tone down the flashy editing and FX a tad and then pull out the stops for your actual editing reel if you're interested in that.

Just my 2 cent, hope I helped in some way...

I liked it a lot, but yeah save the flash for your edit reel. By the way, does anybody know what to call it for real? Or is it actually just called a video reel? Cause I know a lot of people who shoot on film get offended if you use film terms for video work. The scenes from :50-:56 aren't lit, I think there was another interior shot in there that wasn't lit well enough, but besides that your off to a great start.
