Unexplained Murder Short - HVX/M2

I like it just the way it is. No music, no folly effects. Honestly, to me, the starkness of the audio made it feel real. I haven't heard a scene in a film sound so silent and visceral in quite a while. Go with your instincts, but I think you should keep the audio the way it is. People get carried away with sound FX and music.

Questions:

How was the experience shooting handheld with the M2? Did you use a shoulder brace or did you use something else, like the Cavision hand grips?

I am in the process of piecing together a handheld M2 rig so a description of your experience shooting with the M2 in a handlheld environment along with a list of your equipment would really help me out.

I'm leaning towards keeping the audio as is...it needs some work but our folly will be light and only used when it enhances the feeling of the action. I'm a big fan of natural sounds...something that makes me think that I'm actually in the film instead of knowing that it is being shot with a camera.

I would not have been able to shoot handheld without the Marshall HD monitor and the Cavison handgrips...they are life savers. While my rig isn't yet properly balanced front to back I compensated by pushing the camera back further on my shoulder to get better balance. I would also highly recomment a follow focus bc your not going to be able to shoot without it. I use the RedRock follow focus and it works pretty well. The small amount of play isn't noticeable in real world shooting so don't be afraid of the play that you feel when you first attach it to one of your lenses.

Also...I would suggest going with Nikon primes. They seem to offer the best balance of good glass and manual iris control. Unless you can find some older Canon's with manual iris I would go with Nikons. As a bonus, their dirt cheap and very abundant on eBay.

Take a look at the picture of the rig on my shoulder...

Just curious... I've been searching through the forums and I found this comment about the HVX and M2. Is it true?

"...you must shim the rods which causes the rods to hit the baseplate causing the rods to be unable to be used in the back..... which is (I guess) why the powerpod is being developed..... but there is even less info on that release! I am just sad I cannot attatch a rail support shoulder pad and a battery mount on the back"

So you can't use a shoulder pad with the Redrock rails or is this incorrect info? I know you've got the Cavision hand grips. Are the rails just resting on your shoulder?

I purchased the standard Redrcok M2 HD bundle for Nikon lenses and I'd like to match your setup as close as possible.

I shimed the adapter like your not supposed to. If you are clever enough to make your own shims you can make sturdy shims that will not lead to an unsteady connection between the adapter and camera. So the baseplate is resting on my shoulder on top of a cushy towel so it doesn't hurt my shoulder.
