underwater 4k camera?

I was thinking of getting a housing unit for my NX1 but the cost factor is still pretty high so the next thought was to get a camera that is waterproof but shoots 4k. Any thoughts?

I'm waiting on a compact camera with a decent sensor (1" or similar) shooting okay 4k video. I have a Panasonic FT5 today which is a great travel companion and I hope there will come 4k shooting compact cameras that are as tough as the FT5 next year.

Depending on how deep. The only real 'cheap' solution is a GoPro Hero 4 or 5 or one of the Sony Action Cams

Other options would be a housing for a iPhone.

Apart from that. They will all be $1000 to $3000 for a housing for an existing camera.

Meikon makes some reasonable housing for the Sony cameras - I have the A7s version and it's served me fine for those times I do need to jump in the water.

I don't think they have an NX1 version but it's worth checking out what else they have, and pick up a 2nd hand body to suit!

How deep do you need to go?

If only a foot or so, or less, then a splash bag for your NX1 might be sufficient.

I worked on an underwater music video recently where we just used an Arri Alexa Mini in a splash bag.

I will be out in the ocean not sure what area yet either down by Gisborne or outside of Auckland. Got to film deep enough to have the bottom of the boat in the shot.

Buy a cheap Chinese go pro clone in the 4K variety. Dirt cheap and surprisingly good. I have two underwater housings made for my old SD camcorders, and the chinese thing knocks them dead quality wise. The housing is decent and waterproof to sensible depths and for occasional use, I won't be buying anything better - not remotely economic unless this is a major income stream.
