Wanted to see if I could entice any of the experts to attempt a basic tutorial on resolution and pixel aspect ratio. I think this would make a fantastic sticky for the technical section. Anyone else agree??? It seems like there are always a lot of questions about this general topic, whether it is regarding wide screen letterbox vs. squeeze, traditional vs. high def video, etc. True, answers are out there, but they are really scattered around in a lot of different threads, often under unrelated initial titles, and the discussion really varies in technical level and assumed prior level of understanding.
I am envisioning a basic discussion of what resolution truly means, and how the concept differs from camera to LCD computer monitor to NTSC or CRT display with horizontal scanning. Included would be a discussion of DV vs. VGA pixel aspect ratio and how it affects resolution. A practical walkthrough of some kind would really make it hit home -- e.g. walking through shooting in a particular format, properly setting up your parameters to capture that format to an NLE, and understanding how resolution affects your choices of output parameters when you render.
I know that I have been trying to read about this stuff for a long time, but I still have a really hard time wrapping my head around it. And I am by no means a technical illiterate -- I actually have a degree in computer science. Perhaps I'm alone, but I bet there are a lot of other newbies out there like me who would be immensely grateful for a clear, concise, consolidated tutorial. And those who understand it would probably be happy to not have to keep explaining it all over the place...
What do you say -- any takers among the pros? Any support for this idea among the newbies? Does what I am looking for already exist somewhere?
THANKS in advance for considering!!
