Under Scan question

This is from a newbie, so please have patience.

I have been shooting with a Dvx100A with the anamorphic adapter on 24PA,
and have been using a Sony PVM 14L5 for monitoring.

I wasn't using the underscan feature on the monitor. While editing on final cut I noticed some boom tips and lights hanging in.

Is this a definite reshoot? Or is there a way?

it depends how far into the frame they are and what your final output is. If you are delivering on VHS/DVD, people will be watching it on their TV on overscan so they won't see it (unless it dips in too far). if your final output is quicktime for the internet or something, then you'll have to crop it.

if you have access to after effects (or possibly motion, i havent used motion yet), you can mask alot of that out as well. it's a little time consuming but usually cheaper than a reshoot.

Shaftbond's answer is exactly right. If you're planning on projecting it in a way that shows the full frame, then those items may come into view. But if you're planning on viewing it on a television, it should be hidden.

Depending on your editor, a "safe area" mask should be a simple thing to implement. You should be able to crop out the offending items with a consistent black mask over the whole program, and presumably nobody would ever notice. But if it's just a few shots, and reshooting is easy, you might want to just do that as well.
