uncompressed dvcprohd, how?

I am new to hd content. Workflow: 720p 24, via p2 cards to fcp, to dvd sd. Will be doing everything on one dual g5. Will I gain an advantage in color correction quality by using a card like blackmagic or like?

What I haven't grasped is, if fcp will compress the content in case I use no card, and if a card will then let the mac work uncompressed until compression? (Color grading likely to be done by external pro).
If this is the case, what is the difference between 10 bit 4:2:2 and the compressed stuff?

Hope someone can be pedagogical about this
best, soren

I would not use DVCproHD to do CC... you can get a Kona or BM card and capture uncompressed. I am using DVCporHD to offline, the rebuilding uncompressed to do CC...

So what would be the workflow of batch recapturing from the HVX? Would you have to render all the P2 files into uncompressed space, or render your online cut (cuts only, no fx or cc) to an uncompressed timeline?

I am using a 1200a deck. I do firewire to capture then re-compile thru uncompressed via HD-SDI. HVX200 would require analog capture....

Well, I think in this case, analog capture from the HVX wouldn't be possible unless you kept all your P2 cards with their original footage and never re-used them. With the HVX, you'd definitely have to render the cuts only version to an uncompressed codec for cc if required.

Most all serious work is finished uncompressed... not just film, most TV stuff as well.

If you want to reuse the P2's, you can put the dvcpro footage on the drive, then convert to an uncompressed system using the capture card's codec. That way you stay digital, will require more time, more space, etc.
