F55: Uncommon Enemies - online screener

Some DVX'ers may remember this short film I filmed back when the Sony F55 first came out and had used it to shoot a short film called "Uncommon Enemies". I'm pleased to announce that after 5 years of film festival screenings around the world, some awards even, and a world rights sales/distribution deal, we are finally able to put a screener of it online through a free/no subscription necessary VOD platform called IndieVue.

This film is somewhat monumental for me as it marks my journey down the path with the Sony F55 after I had moved off the Sony F3 with the intention, and deposit I had made in late 2012, of moving over to RED cameras not really being happy with 8-10-bit bit-depth and "color" of Sony's color science.

This was the first narrative film I shot with the Sony F55 when I got the camera back in March of 2013. Some DVX'ers may still remember the thread where I posted some frame grabs and test grades. I'd like to say it was at a time where I definitely wasn't that good at grading footage from Sony and especially what is now considered the "older" color science sgamut. Some history for all the newer peeps with Sony cameras; back in 2013, slog3/sgamut3.cine was not out yet and also you could not shoot in CineEI mode to XAVC cards to strip away some of the "Sony look". Upon the F55/F5 initial release CineEI mode was strictly for recording RAW using the R5 RAW module only. That left me (and others) shooting in custom mode, slog2/sgmaut with all its joy and glory that myself, and many have hated for so many years.

With a budget of $8000, calling on a lot of favours and handling all post ourselves, this film is what we came up with. The film stars Michael Cram (once popular Flashpoint Canadian TV show) and Melanie Scrofano (Saw VI, Manson) with Special Effects work by Steven Dawley (Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Silent Hill). Visual Effects by Kirk Brillon (Game of Thrones, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2).

Enjoy!

Very cool Dennis. I remember the toolset was sparse on my F55, I shot in 4k but had no way of watching 4k, didn’t have to wait long for Cine-EI and never hated S-Log2/Sgamut and still use it to this day, as well as S-Log3. Never a complaint about the color and now I can match any color or look although never claimed a signature look for my own; golden rays would be a sentimental favorite. Ironic that I’ve always felt my strength was in the edit/color suite yet I’m sought more as the wheel man, enticed supposedly that I don’t have to do any editing/grading, just hand off footage. That’s fine, I take the money.

Congrats on your work!
