Unclear how 960 x 720 = 1280 x 720?

I searched for this answer and only found answers that were a little complicated to understand.

When I shoot in the HVX 200 at 720P and get a frame size of 960 x 720, why does it turn to 1280 x 720 when exported?

Is there a simple answer? :)

Thanks peopels...

It's recorded using nonsquare pixels (just like almost all video formats). The footage is prefiltered from 1280x720 to 960x720 when recorded, and the footage is tagged to have a 1.333:1 pixel aspect ratio. If you're working in a square-pixel environment, the footage needs to be expanded back to the original 1280x720.

Thanks Barry for the quick reply :) Let me review just for myself to make sure I got it.

So when you shoot with the HVX you're using nonsquare pixels which make the image 960 x 720, but it's just resizing that image size from 1280 x 720. So when you export out of FCP, the image resizes back to it's original format of 1280 x 720. Correct? And just to make sure... there is no loss of image correct?

Wait so...

How the the dsp in the hvx make the transition from square pixel to non square?

Does the HVX record in square pixels or does it record non square pixels natively because of the 960x540 chip size?

And one more question...

When exporting HVX video from an NLE, does forcing the output of 1280x720 square pixels cause a loss of quality? Or is it the same as a 960x720 non sqaure output..

I can't seem to get Premiere to output non-square, and still appear widescreen. So I just force it to Square Pixels.

I presume the internal processing all deals with square pixels. The image is then resized to 960x720, or 1280x1080, or 1440x1080, depending on what mode you're using, before it gets recorded. The recorded footage uses anamorphic (non-square) pixels. Same as all the other HD formats that are its contemporary (like HDV, XDCAM-HD, and HDCAM).
