That is wicked. It looks like one of the Nascar tracks, I'm not sure which one to be honest.

You may also like Sprint car. Good **** man.

uhhhhh, what? Man, get behind one of those babies and drive to win.

If you don't feel a rush, jeeeeez, I don't know about you.

I like the stunt-type driving, sprint cars just go round & round...I'm not a big NASCAR fan either.

.... but that's just me....

Ha! take this:

Man, okay, I've had this conversation before. Cars don't just go round and round. It's called racing. Sigh, geeez. The idea of a race is to beat the other guys as you go around the circle.
If you don't follow a driver, then yeah, it's looks like nothing. If you follow the race and the strategies, then it gets better.

Better yet, strap yourself in and try and win one. Seriously. Small town dirt track or whatever. If you want a rush, that's it man.

I like it!

As someone who's done a little driving, I have to tell y'all that sliding around a corner is *not* the fast way around the corner. In actual racing, sliding is due to a *lack* of skill.

That said, sliding a car around is crazy fun. If you have sufficient power available as this guy clearly does, you can actually steer with your foot, as he shows. Of course, it's hell on tires. And tires that can take this kind of punishment are way expensive. But if you can get someone else to pay for it, there are certainly worse ways to spend a day!

On dirt track and dirt roads often times sliding is the only way to get around the corners.

I can't find any specific videos on you tube but I'm sure you'll agree.
There are some examples in these following posts.
I know your speaking of road racing though. In that case I agree.

Here's a few clips. We need more racing vids here on the board. :)

In this clip, am I hearing the announcer say 'Jimmie Johnson' at around 0:46 or is that my imagination?

Yes. But this filmed demo in question isn't on dirt, it's on pavement.

The problem is lateral grip. Dirt (gravel, sand, etc.) slides underneath the tire at forces well below the maximum that the tire can deliver. It's not so much that the tire is sliding as it is that the dirt is sliding.

Pavement OTOH isn't going anywhere and can take as much force as the tire can deliver.

Another way to look at it is the difference between the coefficient of static friction vs. the coefficient of dynamic friction. Mechanical engineering programs at university devote entire semester long classes to this; I'm not going bore anyone to tears by attempting to explain it here. It's been so long I've probably forgotten way more than I remember anyway.
