Un-sellable A7s?

I knew tech lost value quickly, but this beats anything I've ever seen, I'm unable to sell my A7s for 60% of it's original value from 9 months ago...crazy! Any ideas?

Well...the A7s turned out to not be the miracle that the low-light capabilities suggested.
A great many people have found the LOG footage VERY difficult to grade, and skin tones in particular have been really problematic.

The A7R-II coming out so soon, and with such elevated specs didn't help either.

All used stuff - step into the buyers shoes..

How much would I save not to have a new one?

Well id want
10% discount for dealing with a private individual
probably the new price has drpped 20% since you bought
new tech on the horizon (must have features) might knock off 20%
Actual wear and tear 10%

Pretty soon you run to selling for 30-40% of purchase price

I saw a C100 on here the other day which was more expensive than todays dealer price!

Items like the 7q not 7q+, A7 sony and others seem very vunerable with the upgrade cycle in months.

I dont think its specific to A7s per se.
almost applies to all cameras. technology just improves so fast these days

Yeah, unless I really need to, I just don't sell my old stuff anymore - I use it until it dies :)

Try eBay?

An A7s body with one extra battery just went for $1735 + shipping.

Actually in the past week, 11 A7s bodies were sold, averaging $1771 a piece.

I guess I'll try Ebay, just had it here and DVinfo.net thinking this is the group that would appreciate the deal...I have the body at $1700 and the 24-70mm Zeiss for $800, so hopefully that'll go on Ebay..

Wait until the hysteria surrounding the A7RII has died down and people realise it isn't an A7s replacement for video.

If the overheating is a real world problem on the a7RII, it will make many think twice. With an external 4K recorder, they are almost equal in video performance - the a7RII has IBIS and high megapixel still shooting while the a7S retains great low-light ability without the need of a speedbooster and FF depth of field out of the box.

with the a7s ii about to come out, your a7s value will go down more. Also, seem like you force people to buy the combo, that make it harder to sell.

Jem, I just went through the same thing with my A7s, which I sold. The market rate in my estimation for an A7s right now on boards like DVXuser and FredMiranda among trusted buyers is around $1500 to 1600$ after fees (or due to lower or no fees) and this is for a 9+ camera. The prices on eBay will net you the same. Rightly or wrongly the reviews of the A7Rii are really hurting the prices on the A7s, especially in the past week as cameras have come out. Now is a really GREAT time to get an A7s if you are on the fence and a lousy time to sell it. I took my lumps and let mine go but I'm not sure it was a great deal.

I would think for pro or semi pro users that an A71 and Pix E are a much better solution right now than the A7Rii and can be had for cheaper.

I agree with others that I think once the hype dies down that the camera resale will creep back up into the 1700 to 1800 range.

There was quick a bit of depreciation on my Canon 5D III when I sold that to get the A7s as well. I think I took a 1k haircut on that.

When I bought my A7s last year I'd budgeted and kept some money for a 4k recorder, I never wound up getting that so I'm willing to make the leap to the A7RII for now--hoping overheating issues don't make that a poor choice.

About 2 weeks ago I paid $810 for the same lens. If you want to sell it quickly expect to get anywhere from $785 to about $820

look back at the history of Sony A7, A7r release time and you can figure it out yourself. :D . Typical used price for A7s at this time is around $1500 whether you like it or not. If i'm looking for a A7s now, i wouldn't pay more than $1500.

Unless Sony fixes the overheating problem when shooting 4K internal on the A7Rii I doubt they will capture the video audience in quite the same way that the A7S will. If they don't fix the overheating issue the only way the A7Rii becomes a viable video solution is if you by an external recorder like a Shogun or Odyssey 7.....which adds a significant amount of cost to the equation.

I get the desire to have the new and greatest gear, the a7rii looks really cool. But it doesn't make your A7s any worse. I use mine daily, and the 4k from it is gorgeous when needed. Shoot with what you own and don't stress.

People have been saying the a7s2 is due out in 6 months since january, your 0 amount of proof is no different than theirs was way back then.

Regardless of the release of the next body, people should start to realize that cameras will hold their values less and less the more companies like sony release new models that 'do everything you wanted the last model to do' every 6mo to a year. Buy it, get as much use out of it as you can, and write it off.

I own A7, A7r, A7ii, A7s, GH4 etc..

so i do know the cycle and when is good time to buy or sell. With so many choice out there, the OP can't expect to sell his A7s at the price he would like to. Sony usually refresh their A7 pretty at the very close time frame. Look at A7ii and now A7r ii....A7s ii is expected and for folk that doing video more, will likely to to hold off and wait.

also, forcing people to buy that junk 24-70 FE lens with it? common.. BTW, i also own that 24-70FE...just in case you're going to question about it. lol

The A7s is already over a year old. Its going to continue to drop in value, regardless of what the A7rII does. People are selling a lot of them right now because the A7rII does 4k internal, has IBIS, a vastly superior AF system and so on. Overheating isn't going to stop the slide because you can easily record a full 30 minutes in 4k internally. If you're recording shorter takes, you can record lots more. If you're recording 1080p, you can go till you're out of batteries. I never understand these posts, especially about Sony bodies since they crank out 3 new ones every year. The used prices are going to sink like a stone pretty quickly. Lens prices have held well though.

Very interesting discussion, thank you all for the insightful replies. Just to be clear, I'm not forcing the package, as a matter of fact I updated the original For Sale post to clarify that and give the asking price for body and lens separately :) I do a lot of filming on the street during my travels, and so having 4K internal is great for me, and not a deal breaker if I can't record for more than 20 min. since I'm only doing short burst shooting. I have FS100 and FS700 for long format shoots, and could record 4K externally from the FS700 and A7s both if I wanted to add more equipment, but having it internal will be much easier for 90-some percent of my shooting. At this point I might just keep the A7s though, like I have my FS100 which I still love shooting with.

As for the lens, I just got the Batis 25mm, and have a quick test shot against the 24-70mm going up, definitely a difference but not as dramatic as I imagined...
