GH5 UHD: 25p and 50p: strenghts and weaknesses

Hi,
I like to understand better and all your replies are important for me. Why if do I ask 100 guys the question about 25p and 50p, almost everybody answers to shoot at 25p? It seems incredible. For me the best option is 50p 10bit but GH5 doesn't have this option and I need to choose what it is giving me. But I'm sure someone is mocking me with my question.

Strength points shooting 25p: 1) the video has a good cinema appearance. 2) There is the possibility to modify the color of the clips more easily in post-production. In fact my camera has 25p 10bit. 3) It allow you to shoot with less light.

Points of weakness shooting 25p: 1) You can't shoot fast moving scenes. 2) You can't do a good rallenty. 3) If there is a lot of light you have to increase the shutter speed with some worries.

My considerations:
I want to get the best UHD image quality with my GH5 camera (without installing Luts, etc. etc.) I'm the travel organizer, the director and the filmmaker. I don't make videos for youtube. The are for me only and I watch them on my 65" TV or I make projections on a 2 meters screen. Above all I make only documentaries in UHD where there are sunny days like in Africa and South America. Why do I have to shoot in 25p 10bit? I thank you for all your suggestions.

You don't have to shoot 25P. The strengths and weakness you list are close enough to accurate to understand the decision. if you have an audience of one - yourself - shoot whatever framerate you prefer.

"best UHD image quality" is a subjective ask. Does best mean "technically best" or "most aesthetically pleasing"? Do you want your travel videos to look like home videos or do you want them to look like a BBC nature series? If it's the latter, shooting 24/25 fps is an important part of the recipe.

The one statement I will take exception to is "You can't shoot fast moving scenes." This simply isn't true. There are literally thousands of Hollywood movies with fast moving scenes shot at 24P.

Hi joe, thanks for your reply. For "best UHD image quality" I mean the best quality of the video: good definitions, good colours, good chromatism, etc. etc. I'd like to get the mximim with my GH5. You are telling about BBC and I think even BBC likes to get the max of the quality but in 24/25p. The difference is only in the frame rate, I think it.

If you are shooting in South America, be careful with artificial lighting and monitors:
there is a different frequency on electricity (no 50Hz, I think all countries have 60Hz)..

Points of weakness shooting 25p: 1) You can't shoot fast moving scenes.

You're telling me you've never seen fast action in a Hollywood movie? Never seen a sports movie?

Bottom line, 24 fps (or 25 in PAL country) "looks" professional. Anything else looks amateur. Even Peter Jackson's multi-million dollar 3D "Hobbit" looked like a cheap BBC version of Dr. Who when shown at 48 fps.

hey, but I don't have that camera, that tripod and that free time to shoot as Holliwood movie.
Anyway what you are tellig is right but my dubt is different. I never made videoediting at 25p 10bit, but I made always it at 50p 8bit. Sure I can make some tests but they aren't the same than shooting in remote areas of Africa where earth is red, where there is a lot of light, etc. etc. For this reason I wrote I'd like to shoot at 50p 10bit because for me 50p is important but even 10bit is important, but it is impossible for me to shot with the option I like most. Therefore I reformulate the question: in my same conditions do you prefer to shoot at 50p 8 bit or 25p 10bit? In other words: would it be better to focus on 50p or 10bit? I hope you understand my bad english and you tell me your suggestions.

If you are shooting LOG then 10 bit if you are shooting a standard picture profile you might as well shoot 8bit. I don't see any reason to NOT shoot 25p especially if its going to be on the web.
I shoot documentary footage for broadcast at 25p regularly without issues.

Fast answer: 50P. There seem to be some queries about the quality of the GH5 internal 10 bit, and I doubt you'll get a definitive answer on this forum - maybe Google, do some pixel peeping, make up your own mind and let us know your conclusions. I personally doubt in a blind test on your TV you'd notice any difference between 8 and 10 bit. 50p gives you a bit more flexibility - some slow motion, which maybe is what you meant by "fast moving scenes", best quality if you need to go to 50i for TV broadcast, but of course if storage is going to be an issue... Which is why, depending on delivery requirements, I tend to shoot 50p FHD (for 25 fps viewing), 8 bit 25P UHD (mainly for cropability) and 24P 10 bit external (I don't get the say about the 24P).

Rainer, you have the same my thought about 50p but my greatest dubt is in the post-production. A 10bit clip allows you to modify more easily the colors. Maybe I make an error because I never made a videoediting with 10bit clips. In Africa where I shoot there is red earth and a lot of light and many clips are incorrectly exposed. For this reason I have this dubt between shooting 10bit or 8bit even if I like more to shoot at 50p. I hope you understand me.

Really? - it's news to me.......
I wouldn't shoot anything 8bit on the GH5 unless you went straight to broadcast and didn't do any grading even then I'd still worry if it had areas of smooth tone which would show up banding. If you shoot V-LOG / HLG L then 10bit is mandatory IME.

Shirozina, I wasn't expressing any opinion on whether other's comments on the quality of GH5 10 bit were justified (or not), just that those comments exist. Google will reveal strings of them, including views that the internal 10 bit is superior to external recorded. Not suggesting that's justified or not, either.

Can you post some links?

Your last statement is pretty ingenuous! You currently have 50 videos on YouTube, with over 2.5 million views on one, and over 25,000 followers: naked natives does the trick every time! You don't have to do anything you don't want to do! I remember pouring over the family hoard of National Geo's from the 30's as an adolescent in the early 50's hoping another naked "lost tribe" had been photographed!

Sorry, but I will never put my videos on youtube. On Youtube you watched only craps. They are scraps of the documentaries. Why should I put good clips on youtube?

Sorry, but I just can't grasp why you feel compelled to post your no good "craps" on YouTube. Seems to not speak very well of your hoard of subscribers, who must be sucked in by the nudity content rather than any artistic or ethnographic interest.

How should I tell you? I have no interest in youtube. I have to put a few clips to attract a bit of interest about traveling but certainly not about the quality of the clips. I don't publish my documentaries.

Right. What, 5-10 hours of current YouTube programming in 50 videos, 5 million or more views, 25,000+ followers?? I'd say you're a YouTube celebrity! In spite of your protestations about them being pretty lousy, the several I've seen are actually pretty well done, with a story line developed visually (mi Espanol no es muy bueno), good variety of shots. They seem to be shot with a 1" or smaller sensor camcorder probably in Auto mode, with somewhat limited DR. Which is why you have the GH5, I guess.
