I bought my DVX used in november and did not know that using different tapes would be bad for the heads. (im a huge moron)

anyways..i have no idea what the previous owner used and ive used 3 random JVC tapes (i wish i knew the type so i could post it) and one Sony DVM60PRL Tape. Now that I know that i should only use panasonic MQ tapes.. should i just use them from now on? what damage could i have possibly done? if any, is there a way to correct it?

and as for cleaning the heads can I use a dry cleaner tape or should i follow the head cleaning FAQ?

im freaking out.. i hope i didnt break anything

Re: Uh Oh - I've Used Different Tapes

Yes you should move to Panasonic MQ tapes and stay with them. The problem is more with the sony tapes you put in the camcorder. You should fallow the head cleaning FAQ because I don't know that much about cleaning the lens.

Re: Uh Oh - I've Used Different Tapes

I don't think you're a moron, at all.

I mean, most reasonable people would probably not suspect that you could actually harm a piece of consumer equipment simply by using one manufacturer's standard and approved media, versus another's...

Or maybe we're both morons. Gotta cover all the possibilities...

Re: Uh Oh - I've Used Different Tapes

yesterday i used a brand new panasonic tape that had been run through a pro VTR at a transfer house for apx 1 min. this was the first time ever that i used a tape in my vtr cam that had been run in anything else that also runs other tapes. I put it in my litte capture cam.. and of course. instant head clog. no video or audio.. intermittant time code. i just ran the head cleaning tape for 3 secs and it fixed it, but it just goes to show you.. not only do you have to stick to one type of tape, but you need to stick to using your tapes only in machines that also only use your tapes. .. i knew this of course but sometimes theres no way around it.. also goes to show why its good to have a different capture and output deck than using your DVX.

Re: Uh Oh - I've Used Different Tapes

Thanks ronik

Neil - So cleaning tapes are ok to use? (the dry kind only i assume)

Sad Max - youre right, being able to do damage to any piece of equipment by using approved media is ridiculous. i just shouldve been more cautious i guess.

so i am definitely going to use panasonic MQ tapes from now on. but did i do any damage to the camera? and if i did.. is there any way to mend its wounds?

Re: Uh Oh - I've Used Different Tapes

i would only use the one from panasonic. and only a couple seconds at a time. preferrably you would just take it in to be serviced and cleaned professionally, or learn how to clean it yourself well. but i didnt have time for that .. i had a deadline and neeed to fedex out the material.
