Ugh.. GH1 lens cap enters the VOID

Blackout

Ughhh...

In an apparent rage or rebellion of some sort... my GH13 lens cap POPPED off my camera and perfectly flew right into a NYC gutter drain today. It didn't even clank it just went right through.

Could this possibly be that I pushed the 24pn hack settings too far - causing my lens cap to commit hari kari?

Is this an easy standard size I can just pickup at B & H or do I have to order this from panny?

You can have mine. Just send me your magic GH13 so I can make sure my lens cap fits.

I promise I won't keep it and leave the country where you'll never find me.

Yup. the generics are usually thinner and flatter than the Pro or Camera Company labeled ones. There are some generics that look similar to the Panny, Canon ones. But B+H might have some Lumix ones.

lol right down the drain without a sound... typical!

id stay away from the generic lens caps as most modern replacement caps feel cheap and nasty, also the wind can blow them off the lens.

i much prefer to buy older canon lens caps, an FD "black writing" or the EF "Ultrasonic" ones from ebay, the plastic they used 10+ years ago is far better than the plastic used on new generic caps.

old = built for quality and to last = no cheap plastic = never buy another!
vs
new = built to make as much profit as possible = cheap brittle plastic = break within a couple years!

lens cap alchemy i guess, sum golds are purer than others

i personally find the all black Canon FD caps perfect.

Where's the video of you on your hands and knees, wearing the big hat, trying to fish it out of the drain? I would pay to see it!

lol hari kari. cheap generic brands suck. usually missing the filter thread. sometimes it damages filter thread of lens or filter. "claimed" original caps r expensive.

So it was the kit 14-140 I lost so just go to b&h and ask for a 62mm cap of any generic brand?

I knocked my cap off getting off a bus in Cancun and only discovered it was gone once I got off. The cap for my GH1, on the 14-42mm lens, did not have much gripping capability compared to an old Nikon cap I happened to have with me. It also happened to have a "leash" which is retractable and screws into the tripod hole. I couldn't find that type online but there are plenty of lens "leashes" or "keepers". If you go to B&H, you might want to try a couple caps to see if one grabs the lens thread better than others and buy a leash as well.

:D Sounds like my week! :D

Since you seem to do a lot of "street" video, you might wanna try an Op/Tech FastCap. I've got mixed feelings about them, but they work, and perfect for street/travel/personal video+photo kinda stuff.

Nothing wrong with aftermarket lens caps...they're cheaper to replace! I'd get a Panny one and store it at home, then use aftermarket ones on the street. I use my Lumix m4/3 lenses at my "job"...weddings...so I don't worry much about the caps. But shooting "home video" on the street here, I use Olympus OM lenses on my GH1 and my Olympus OMG 35mm SLR, and keep all the OEM lens caps stored at home. I bought a pack of cheap aftermarket lens caps on eBay to use on all my OM lenses...they even have "Olympus" printed on the front (more Chinese infringement I guess).

Whenever I leave a bar, lens caps and spectacles seem to want to stay and have another round.

If B&H doesn't have a factory replacement, you can always try Panny's website...apparently designed in 1984. :D http://www.pstc.panasonic.com/Epartr/PartsListChoice.asp

There was none of this. I saw so clearly the whole thing happen and just accepted it plain and simple with a sort of "WTF?" disgust look on my face.

I knew I wasn't getting it back, If I could talk to the GH1 cap man to man.. or man to cap, I would tell it to go %&^# itself and enjoy its life in the sewers of NYC. Maybe it will become a Teenage Mutant Ninja Cap. Who knows. It had a nice warm home... but the GH1's just a teen, and you know those young caps... always rebelling.

Anyway thanks for all the replies. It always did seem to be a crappy cap that didn't stay on to well now that I think about it. I think I'll buy a better one. I'm not so anal as to have to have it say panasonic or lumix on the front. It could say "ass factory" as long as the damn cap does what it's supposed to do, stay on the #&^$& lens and protect it.

Maybe it's lack of sleep.. I'm working on like 10 projects at a time and not sleeping much. Look at THIS Freudian slip I made last night:

Yup.. that's right.. I said I shoot on the "Canon GH13" without even flinching. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

And this, on a channel called "Non Retarded Reviews". I also called the webcam mics 'speakers'.

So I did the exact thing the channel I created is supposed to avoid - I was retarded. Most wont catch those two flubs though, or they will e-mail me desperately asking for "more info on the Canon GH13" to which I'll reply that it is a secret beta test version of the GH13 and the Canon 7D combined that has the Panny resolution and detail and video features, with the Canon color. Lol.

I think this was my subconscious manifesting being mad at Panasonic for making a cap that flies off at will!

CrapCapAssCanonic, you mean?

Maybe Trumpet Dino could dive into the sewers... Oh no, he's stuck onto your body... So where is your head? Yes, that's it: you lost your head. Luckily, you didn't lose your hat, which isn't particularly a cap. Never buy a cap again, use a hat!

Today I was standing on a small hill to do some high bitrate native around shooting. I took off the lens cap and guess what, it fell onto the ground, but not flat. It started rolling down. I also had some sort of wtf experience, but luckily I could put my foot down a little before the cap reached that spot.

Maybe these things have a will of their own...
Or maybe it indeed is this native thing.

And your are keeping us all informated by posting on these forums around here and, I guess, reading all response as well.

Maybe you should retire (your reviews) or just make non tired reviews instead.

Your three responses confused and bewildered me so much that I am brewing an all new form of tea to calm my shattered reading comprehension center known as my brainhead.

Put a leash on those lens caps! But have an emergency release, just in case it gets caught in an elevator, passing truck or Dr Who's Tardis door. It might take you and the GH1 for a ride.

Lens caps were just never ever a thing I gave much thought to. As a matter of fact this is the FIRST one I have lost in all my cameras in all my life, and I've had A LOT of cameras. I've lost my keys and my wallet many more times. It really did just randomly jump the hell off... like it decided sky diving or sewer diving was just the right thing to do at that moment. I didn't bump it or brush it or nada... looked like a jack in the box when it pops out... only a cap in the box...

Mine flew off a few times. The Lumix cap has strong springs. If it's off center a bit, a couple bumps and BOING! I have some screw-in caps from Century Optics, but they take too long to take off. Sometimes I use a flexible mailing tube cap, or tupperware cap for cups.

This is where I did not lose my lens cap when shooting hacked GH1 24p

I was kind of retarded, too, here, I guess... (Hell, I don't know, for sure.)

This week I came by the same spot and took a rest on the small hill. I shot a video this time using my Contour GPS camera, attached to my right upper arm. I could shoot a number of very nice videos this day.

Strangely enough, when I was on the train to my starting location that morning and grabbed the Contour GPS camera, the rubber lens cap fell off and rolled away in the compartment... After some hesitating I decided to try my luck and look a couple of seats in front of mine. I was asking a guy if he, by incidence, would have seen a ring roll by. Oh, it's right there under your leg, I answered the question myself. Wow, these are really things on the fly, if you don't keep your eyes on them.

Here's my first detoured review!

Here's my first detoured review!

I was kind of retarded, too, here, I guess... (Hell, I don't know, for sure.)

So here is my first retarded non-rear view featuring the Opteka X-Grip (similar to something called CamCaddy or something alike) and my non-hackable V1.34 firmware GH1 (now that you see it, Vitaliy, can I get some access to the GH1 database?). My hackable GH1 is on a(nother) quick release plate, so that one stayed in the bag I carried on my back on my bike without any book at all. Bike the way, the Opteka X-Grip comes without any manual at all, not even very scarce instructions, only what it is intended for, so you will have a manual experience to find out about it. That's about it. This is the view on it, it is retarded, it's a non-rear view and I am not looking back on it, no further comments on these from my site. I do not have any site at all, but that's besides the subject.

And these are the two clips that the GH1 recorded:

Here's a non-detoured non-rotated roundview from a ferry using the same setup, that is, this is foolage from the same non-hackable GH1 on the same Opteka X-Grip. I guess it is a little more stable than I myself am.
