UFO's

The biggest problem I see with UFO's is distance. It's likely that the universe is (relatively speaking) TEEMING with life. Even if only 1 in 1 million solar systems have a single planet that can even support life it still means there would be 40,000 such planets in our galaxy*.

In my opinion it's more likely a higher number then 1 in a million. The identical elements of life are fairly common... with the possible exception of water (at least in OUR neighboring planets).

*It's estimated that there are at least 70 billion galaxies. We already know there are over 40 billion. Astronomy is incredible if you can wrap your mind around the numbers... but unfortunately 95% of the general public can't even comprehend the vastness of the numbers and what it really means.

Am I the only one who thinks it's funny how there is so much $ put into SETI and we have a large scientific community that embraces the search for extraterrestrial intelligence... and meanwhile back on planet earth we can hardly even get along with other humans?

Politics, religion, and culture are so alien to us that we must try to kill each other as soon as our way of life is threatened because we don't relate to each other. This isn't an "us versus them" comment... it's an us AND them comment... and anybody can be "us" and anybody can be "them".

Why in the hell does anybody think that we're going to relate with the politics, religion, or culture of something that's (most likely) a million times more advanced then we are? Almost every life form on earth takes advantage of every other life form within the bounds of ability, necessity, and convenience... and that includes our own species on down. I'll never understand the Kumbaya stupidity that a vastly advanced life form would embrace us as mutually beneficial equals instead of pets, slaves, food, or an easily rubbed out annoyance as they harvest whatever it is we have that's of value to them.

When's the last time you truly cared about the culture and ideas within a tribe of chimpanzees? We're only one gene different from them.

The whole SETI thing blows my mind... I honestly think that the universe probably is full of life and that incomprehendable distances are part of the protection strategy so that each bubble of an experiment can happen without too much interruption.

Anwer me this...if aliens are advanced enough to come from millions of miles away, why do they always use all those lights on their ships? You'd think they'd be able to fly without lights, like some of our government aircraft.

Just something to think about.

I gotta say... this thread is getting dangerously close to being offensive with some of the politics and religion being put forth and ridiculed.

What's specific? It's AS A WHOLE... the politics of EARTH and human existance versus the politics of a different planet and the carniverous zap-oids and their relentless craving for human meat burgers. The point was that I wonder why some of the most intelligent amoung us thinks that a totally different race is going to embrace us as a whole when we don't even embrace each other... now give me a hug.

:love4:

Your whole pitch requires a belief in extraterrestrial life in the first place. Are you suggesting that those who do not believe in this lifeform are not among "the most intelligent among us"? See what I'm saying? :)

I agree with what you're saying. If the extraterrestial lifeforms did exist in all of those galaxies; there would be varying degrees of aggressive traits. Let's just hope we don't run into any Klingons. Some would want to wipe us out. Some might be more advanced than us. Yet still hold onto dogmatic beliefs that a mythical group of people with only 2 arms and 2 legs and 2 eyes are god like and are to be worshipped. You just never know about the craziness of the universe.

I like the numbers you threw out there about the different galaxies. One thing though, not everything would be carbon based lifeforms. So then you're looking at an even increased # in alien worlds in theory. There could be things that can live in a sulpheric atmosphere and not need water or oxygen but rely on other compounds of elements.

Ooops! Yeah I get your point... I wasn't putting myself in the category of "the most intelligent amoung us" however. I never graduated college and I think I'd be quickly lost in a true genius level conversation. I meant from an outside perspective of me observing what I would deem "the most intelligent amoung us"... while not being a part of that group... it seems odd to me that THEY would search for something that I (by logical deduction) don't think it would behoove them to find.

If there is only one fair way to judge how a person should be treated by something more societally advanced... I think that would be based on how much consideration they give those who are less societally advanced.

My point about the probability of extraterrestrial life I would HOPE is not considered to be political or religious... that would be disheartening to think that somebody would argue the believe of aliens to be contrary to the existence of God... because if the two could not co-exist as possibilities then I'd have to point out that there are 40 billion (average number of solar systems per galaxy) times 70 billion (approximate number of galaxies and growing) that have had about 4-6 billion years more time in this place then we have (2000-50,000 years off of a timeline that's 4 billion years long is but a sliver of a sliver)... If a person can handle multi-tasking then I wouldn't fear for the capacity of something which created ALL of that to have an advanced version of that same capability.

One time I was in the woods with my cousin, we were about 7 and 8 respectively - and I saw this dot moving across the horizon - and it turned black, then white - then became invisible, then black and white again - it was moving in a wierd way, that is to say; it was moving extremely fast but at an odd clip, it was moving sort of towards the ground at a really wierd angle but kept regaining it's altitude...

It was bizzarre

To this day I still believe I honestly saw 2 of them when I was in H.S. (triangular shaped) Still kinda freaks me out when someone brings up the UFO topic. Yep, I believe, I'm not so naive to think we're the only living things in existence at our level (or higher).

Yeah well... that's kinda what I was referencing above when I made the comment about this thread being dangerously close to political and/or religious content.

Instead of just stating your belief, you (essentially) called all UFO/ET non-believers naive. Perhaps you assume everyone else believes the same as you and, therefore, no tolerance is necessary(?). Or, maybe you don't care if you insult someone else's intelligence(?).

Its called LIFE and you will never know for sure if you dont quit living on this board and actually get outside your house! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Love you, man! :)

Yea I guess what I said was kind of insulting to those people. The one's we don't speak of. Life outside of earth can be any form, doesn't have to be green humanoids. And to think out of all the planets and all the solar systems that there isn't life on any of them but our own Earth. Well, maybe a better word is egocentric. Yeah, sorry about the naive comment, what I meant to say is that everyone else but me is egocentric. LOL!
