Types Of Media And More

Hi I'm new to this forum. I am currently waiting on the arrival of my DVX100B. I have been reading up on the types of media to use. I'm surprised to hear that you should really only stick to one type. I guess it all make sense.
I have a Sony DCR TRV120, and I used nothing but Sony tapes. I got a real good deal on some Fuji tapes at BJ's. Shortly after using these tapes I started to see scan lines on the playback. I bought a cleaning tape which only acts a temporary fix. The camera shoots fine. I just have to run this darn tape often. It's a pain. Believe it or not, if I do a slight tap on the tape door, the scan lines will go away. ?????. Kind of crackheaded, but it works.
I really do not want to go through this with the new camera.
Good thing I checked these forums before I went ahead and stocked up on all types of media. I just bought a two pack of Panasonic Professional SP 80, AY-DVM80XJ. Does anyone use these tapes? And is this a good tape to start with?
Also, I noticed you can get 120 on the LP mode. I hear some people here getting a few hours out the their tapes. The old rule still stands with this camera right? Shooting in LP will give you a lower quality picture? And if so, why would you use this mode?

Thank you

J

The general rule is to pick one brand of tapes and stick with it. I've used Sony tapes for years in my Canon Gl1 without a problem and I use the Panasonic MQ tapes in my DVX100a with great results. If you do need to switch tape brands I've heard you should run a head cleaner through the camera. I've never used the particular tape you purchased but It should work fine.

Yes LP mode does give you lower quality but sometimes people need the longer record time, maybe for a wedding or something where the camera is on a tripod without a cameraman. I personally have never taken my camera out of SP mode. But It's nice to know I could if I needed to.

By the way you're going to love your camera. Keep reading up the forums and you'll be way ahead of the game by the time your camera comes. Seacrest out.

Rule number 2: Pick dry or wet and stick with it. Some tapes use a dry lubricant ala Sony and some use wet ala JVC. Mixing the two leaves residue on the heads of both camera and playback unit so whatever you start with, stay with.

"Rule Number 3 : Search is your friend"

There is always a few of these condescending "go search" guys in every forum.
Hey silverfox go do a little search on "AY-DVM80XJ" and you will see only my thread.
I wanted to know if anyone uses this brand. It obvious when someone say's "Good thing I checked these forums before I went ahead and stocked up on all types of media" that they did do a search. Go back and read again.

Hey Sacksnack, thanks for the info!

Never used my DVX100A in anything but SP mode, so had forgotten that there was an LP mode!

But the quality is identical in LP mode - DV is DV. But because the signal is being recorded over less tape (tape running slower), any tape damage or dropout will cause more picture/sound disturbance when it occurs. Not reusing tapes should minimise this.

In addition the operating manual has this to say:

Even when material is shot in the LP mode, the picture quality will not deteriorate but mosaic-type noise may occur or certain restrictions may apply to some of the functions.

In the following cases, mosaic-type noise may occur and/or proper operation may not be possible.

O When a tape which was shot by this camera recorder in the LP mode is played back in another digital video component

O When a tape which was shot by another digital video component in the LP mode is played back in this camera recorder

O When a tape which was shot by this camera recorder in the LP mode is played back in a digital video component which is not equipped with the LP mode

O When slow or frame advance playback is performed

O When the camera search function is used

Don't be tempted to use 80min tapes to get even more recording time (60 min tapes should be the maximum used), as the tape is thinner and more liable to stretch and/or shed it's coatings clogging your heads)

Hey Sacksnack, thanks for the info!

First of all I wasn't stating that you didn't search the forum. The reason I put that there was because you only had 2 post and it's common that people don't search the threads. I myself have done it on occasion. Second of all it's Silver"Wolf" and not "Fox" so you can go back and read that again. Third of all I wasn't being condescending.

Main Entry: con·de·scend
Pronunciation: "kän-di-'send
Function: intransitive verb
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French condescendre, from Late Latin condescendere, from Latin com- + descendere to descend
1 a : to descend to a less formal or dignified level : UNBEND b : to waive the privileges of rank
2 : to assume an air of superiority

Now based upon this definition where was I assuming an air of superiority? I'm not trying to beat up on you or anything even remotely like that and I apologize if my post came off that way.

Recording in the LP mode is not recommended for any camera, but it has nothing to do with lesser quality. The quality does not change but since the tape is moving through the tape path much slower you can create more drop outs and problem at the LP mode. The cost of tape is way down now. It doesn't pay to shoot in LP.
