two video tracks

I have created a second video track and would like to copy segments from my V1 track to V2 so that they overlap and I can apply an effect. What is an effective way to "copy" or drag segments from the V1 track in the timeline to V2? If I use the segment mode, I drag the segment OUT of the V1 into V2 (I want it to remain in BOTH). And if I try to use Edit>Copy>Paste, I end up pasting it right back into the V1 track (even when only the V2 track is selected). I know there's gotta be a way to duplicate segments or entire timelines to new video tracks. Any simple suggestion? Thank you.

Discovered the answer, for anyone interested. You select clip, or use Ctrl to select multiple clips in the V1 timeline, and then select Duplicate from the menu, which then creates a copy of the selected bit in a bin, which you can drag over to the V2 track. Alas, I'm probably the only one who even cares! Heheheh.

My way of doing it:

Select clip on V1, press C (not with segment mode), select source monitor and push 'clipboard contents', there is a button for it, I have set it on a keyboardbutton for fast acces. Then you just past it back in the timeline on the track you selected. So no bin required.

If you want to copy a entire timeline, or a part of it, just drag the timeline from the bin into the source monitor and then past it in the timeline (V or B button)

Well that is a cleaner solution JKL. Thanks. No unwanted duplicate clips in the bin!

Edit: Tried it...I'm missing something...How do I get the clip into the source monitor to begin with? You say click on C. Do you mean select the clip in timeline wiht in/out points and then use the Edit>Copy command? Hm.

Further edit: okay, I'm almost there. I can see that I can use the button in the command pallette to Copy to Clipboard. And then View Clipboard Contents. But when I view it, it's in a "new timeline"--the timeline I'm working with diappears, so I'm not sure how I can drag that copied clip from the clipboard timeline to my V2...but I can sense I'm getting closer. Forgive my density of mass and brain.

Final edit: Yup, I'm an idiot. I wasn't patching the source monitor to the V2 track!!!! Basic thing I just overlooked (I've never patched anything to a track other than V1 before). Anyway, NOW your advice works perfectly. Thank you!

Ok, lets get things straight.
Do you use a avid keyboard? Not that it makes any difference, but then you might know that the C button is pure copy (no need for Ctrl C).

Anyway, mark your clip in the timeline with In and Out points (with T button you select one clip at once). Then after marking the clip of part of the timeline, press the C button on your keyboard. Now the clip you marked is on the clipboard, now you only have to make the clipboard content visible in the Source monitor, if you make it visible in the record monitor, then you see the clipboard content also in the timeline, you don't want that. So click with your mouse once in the source monitor, and then go to the hamburger menu right between the source and record monitor, and press on the clipboard content button. Then the content will be loaded in the source monitor, now you can edit it like you do with all the other material. So just select V2, and past it. You can edit entire timelines into other timelines, or just parts of it.

If you want to work faster, then map some keys.
If I want to copy something and edit it back in the timeline:
Button T for selecting the clip, press Esc. (for toggling between record /source) then I press F7, which the clipboard contents button is mapped to. I select the track I want to edit the clip on, then I press B for overwrite or V for splice-in.

I hope this helps.

Helps immensely. I've finally cracked it thanks to your suggestions. Much appreciated. Have to deliver this short performing arts film by month's end, and I don't know what I would do without my online community there for help. Cheers.

Ooh, I just forget, if you just want two the same clips above each other, then you go stand on the first frame of that clip, press T for selecting the clip (so you have marked the lenght of it. Now press match frame, then select track V2, en deselect V1, now you IN and OUT points are matching with the clip on V1, then edit it into the timeline with B button.
