Two questions on fimimg sports

I will be travelling to Ireland to film some MMA fighting. I will be editing on Final Cut Studio HD.

1. Is there a specific setting for frame rate for slow motion?
2. What settings for fast action sports in normal motion?
3. I have to shoot through the "cage" similar to chain link fence. How can I minimize
or blur out the fence that I will be right up against? or should I back up a bit? Should I zoom in or out to get the best shots?

THANKS!

i dont know what MMA fighting means but if you want to create slow-motion in the post i would suggest to shoot in 50p/60p depends on your need or what you generally use.

to capture fast motion you can set a higher shutter speed to be sure to have everything clear.

to blur elements out you could try to zoom in as much as you can... you simply can test it at home... having something in the foreground that repersents your "cage" and then you zoom in to your subjet that is behind that cage.... the foreground "cage" will get out of focus the more you zoom in. The bigger the distance between for-and background is - the more will be blured out :)

Lawrence, as you would know MMA goes from a blur across the ring to a tied up grapple in seconds. SO need to ensure each is captured for best effect, as in to get the look your after.

How many cameras? Id suggest one is going to be very difficult to do more than just shoot to capture the event as best you can.

Whats the intended output? I suspect anything other than 50/60p (depending where your target export is), will cause some issues. And def. dont want to be trying speed changes in camera, if you only have one camera. Unless, your only putting a montage of the event together then you can do just about anything you want creatively.

Thanks.

I am from USA and I have been shooting and editing in 720p60. I will be using some of the sequences for a documentary. So I only need to get 10-20 seconds of good footage at a time.

I only have one camera, so I will have to change some settings in camera while I shoot.

Take a look at this YouTube clip. At 1:01 he uses slowmotion, probably in post? But if my camera does true slo-mo, I would like to try to use it.

So, maybe I am better off at a distance from the cage, arena where the fighters are in, to blur out the chain link fence?

Documentary on power and sex

Documentary on power and sex

LOL. Yes, the sexy girls in the ring between rounds will be interviewed as well. The fusion of sexuality and aggression is one topic in my film.

Noel,

You seem pretty knowledgeable about HVX200. I was wondering if I could switch back and forth quickly from normal and slo-mo speeds. Perhaps by setting user 1 and user 2 as normal and slo-mo, then simply pressing whatever user as needed?

Your other option is to just shoot 60p for everything and drop it in a 30 or 24p timeline in post with the rest of your footage while "conforming" the slowmo bits to the lower framerate (doing what the camera does for slowmo, just in post). You'll also be able to keep the audio on the slowmo shots this way if that's any benefit. The only drawback to this method is that you don't have instant playback of the slowmo in camera.
