Two questions for new(bie) 100b setup!

Hi everyone,

First post here so bear with me...I've searched around (and will continue to do so) but haven't quite found my questions addressed. So, being very new to this, I hope I'm not embarrassing myself too much by asking the following:

My set up is a 100b and MacBook Pro - just got the 100b recently - and I need to capture what I've shot. Do you:

1) recommend I get two external drives - one for scratch, one for editing? Or would just one do? And since I'm using the camera through the FW, should I get a USB2 drive? Or an eSata?

2) I've seen many warnings about using the camera as a VCR - but will a cheap camera export 24p? And do I really want to trust my footage to a cheaper camera?

My thinking is that I will shoot the tape, rewind, dump the whole lot onto a external drive and go from there trying to save head hours.

Ok, so I realize it's not exactly two questions, but this forum is so great and I'm learning a lot from you guys - I'm hoping the experts here can help me along!

Many thanks in advance!

Either a FW800 drive or eSata would be the call. You'll still have the fw400 port available for capture.

If you've got the budget grab the esata adapter from some place like caldigit and go with a drive that has both fw800 and esata- if you start doing any hd down the road the esata will be helpful.

Don't worry about warnings about head life. You've got a professional camcorder from Panasonic's Broadcast division there. It can withstand a little capturing duty. What you don't want to do is endlessly capture and shuttle and rewind and fast forward and work it like a deck. But if all you're doing is capturing in one big pass, that's no big deal and your 100B is all you need.

Thanks guys!

Barry - the camera I bought came with you book and DVD, thank you for that!!

So, I understand that I should look for an eSata. Any brands and/or size recommendations for the drive? OR for the card? I was looking at a seagate for the drive and maybe griffen for the card.

Does anyone actually use the internal drive for anything? I have a MB Pro and I think I've read enough online to know I shouldn't use it for editing, but so many printed books (including the FCP manual) seem to indicate an internal drive is better. But maybe not for a laptop?

Thanks again!

Mr. Green is such the need voice of reason in hear. I actually have a word doc that is just my favorite posts of his. I got a bunch on audio techniques, film school, camera techniques etc.
