Two problems, making me mad.

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
I posted a while ago about how I can't get my second monitor on my mac, to play my video on. I always could, and then my friend played with my settings, and I can't fix them.

When i go to view, all frames, (or hit f12) my footage would appear full screen on my second monitor, but after he played with my settings, I now can't do that. It says "None" when i go there. In my preferences, it says that to.

So i tried downloading a program Capt Mench offered, which was called FCPResue, and I tried it. It didn't work, and this leads to my second problem.

After doing this method with FCPRescue, my final cut now has barely any filter effects.

Effects like

-Vignette
-Soft Focus

are gone. Several other are gone but I can't think of them at this moment.

If i can get my video to play full screen on my dual monitor, and if i can get some sort of plug-ins that I used to have, that would be great!

I am running on FCP 5.

Thanks,

FCP Rescue doesn't remove effects... but what it will do is remove them from any FAVORITE folder you might have added them to.

With the EFFECTS tab selected, hit APPLE-F and type vignette or focus and see what you come up with.

Did you use FCP Rescue 5 or 6?

You should be using 5... I'd really like to see a screen shot of your EFFECTS tab with the missing filters groups open.

There is a good chance that the 'missing' filters are completely unrelated to your use of FCP Rescue.

I've used it for years, and can tell you it will not remove filters from your effects bin.
Like Mench said - it will remove any 'favorites' folder you might have set up (seeing as that's a preference you set) - but it won't remove the effect from the system.

So either those effects are still in there somewhere, or they were removed/deleted some other way.

I'd officially recommend a fresh install from the ground up.

1) It will make everything work
2) You should do it once in a while anyway
3) It will make everything work BETTER
4) You'll make me happy again.

Go buy a 300g drive - leave your current one alone. -- if you need to, you can go back to this drive and run anything you can't get loaded on the new one.
Install it in your Mac and load the system software on it.
Update!!
Repair Permissions!!
Load FCStudio
UPDATE!!!
Repair Permissions!!
Load other apps and repeat update/permissions.

Good luck

There is no way im going that. I mean, thanks, but im not taking the chance. I have way to much stuff on my computer, and i dont want to lose anytihng, which i probably won't. And backing it all up, well i can't trust that. To much confusion for me.

Thanks a lot though,

Wow.

Just wow.

You don't ever want to do this professionally, do you.

Ask any musician how he takes care of his instrument...
Any singer how she takes care of her voice...
Ask Lance Armstrong if he knows how to fix his bike and or take care of the engine that powers it.

Here's a shocker... You need to get some backbone and take control of what is taking control of YOU! Understand? I'm not slamming you - but if you refuse to do even the simplest of solutions you are going to have a rough future. ROUGH future.

I know a guy in Markham (sp?) who'd be happy to come out and trouble shoot your machine for you. He'll charge $50 an hour (haven't asked him recently) and you'll be up and running.

If you have the original disks you paid for there should be NO reason to fear this.

and if you cant trust your backups then you need to find a new method of backing up. All of our editing machines get rebuilt from the ground up every 6 months. It usually takes me about a weekend to get everything installed but it keeps it all neat and clean and has never posed a problem. Not too mention too that all of our projects are backed up in duplicate onto external drives which reside at two different locations. External hard drives are cheap insurance.
