Two Defective D610s Anyone else have this issue?

So I purchased a D610 on the 23rd of December. The plan was to buy the atomos ninja star and some rokinon cine lenses when funds would allow. After playing with it I noticed that the camera had some odd compression with lower iso's in underexposed areas altough I have been able to see the issue up to 400 iso. I then compared it to my D3200, Hacked GH1, and Unhacked GH1. All three produced better results than the D610. I decided it must be defective and took it back to the store I bought it from they said that wasn't right and exchanged the cameras. My new D610 has the same odd 'color stepping' although a lot less than the first one. Also my D3200 still seems to perform better at low light with the same settings. The second one also has dead/stuck sensor pixels. I have been trying to deal with Nikon but with limited success. The two options I was given was to pay to ship my brand new camera to them for repair, or to return it to the store I bought it from. Anyone else ever have this weird issue that I am guessing is related to the sensor. Here are some links to the video.

D610 is no good for video. Who made that recommendation?

Using a ninja, cine primes would honestly be a waste on such a soft, crude line skipped senor with tons of aliasing/more and bad compression artefacts all over. It's just not a good video image in today's standards. Your is not a defective unit.

If your main use is stills, it's a wonderful camera, video, no, much better alternatives.

Return it if you still can if you want high quality video,

read this DSLRs comparison I've made earlier

I had gone into the store looking at the d7100 and d610. I wanted weather sealing and better low light than the Gh1 and better photographs than my d3200. The guys at the store recommended the d750 over the others. Which was over the 1500 I had to spend. They then said full frame is so much nicer than the d7100 for the full frame. I am definitely regretting not getting the d7100 the more I compare the two. But when I brought the first one in they assured me it was just that camera I had bought and that a new one would fix it. Which it seems to not have. Yeah I read your comparison earlier today. Wish I had seen it sooner haha.

For $1,500 I would suggest buying either a used 5DmkIII or something a little newer like a 6D (which I personally own). Both are full-frame, and quality willl be tons better than a D610.

Just my opinion.

Yeah I looked at a couple used 5d mkiii just that they were a little out of my price range in my area. Plus I have some nikon af-d zoom lenses and Nikon a couple ais primes that I really liked and no Canon lenses. I didn't think this d610 could ever be that bad haha. Live and learn I guess. I'll see if they can exchange it for a different camera since they say the camera is defective. Just a long drive there.

nikon body is never a good candidate for video work in the first place. Even with the D4s.

I wouldn't go as far as saying the Nikon cameras are bad for video, actually they're lovely and one of my favourite images. The only camera I wouldn't use for video in the entire Nikon Line up is the D610, sinply because of the Aliasing and n
moire, and overall softness/compression of the image.

Try to exchange it for a D7100 if you want good video quality. It really does produce better video and the image format is closer to the cinema s35 standard as opposed to full frame.

The downside to going that way is that the stills quality will not be a huge step fron the d3200, the D610 really does produce lovely full frame stills

In the end it comes down to whether you want high stills IQ (D610) or high video IQ (D7100). To get both in one camera you'll have to go with a D750 or D810 ;)

I'm looking to see if I can possibly get a store credit for a month or two and try to get maybe the d750 and hold off a little longer for lenses and the atomos. The reality is I don't really get paid enough to justify buying anything more expensive but I still personally want it haha. The better dslr body has been my last point of upgrade I've spent more on my audio and lighting because I feel like having decent audio and decent lighting with some nice glass goes a lot farther than just having a good camera body.

OTOH, you might consider buying the D750 now and learning how to best integrate it with your sound and lighting techniques. You can always save up for an Atomos later, once you've confirmed it will make a significant difference.

Yeah I agree thats kind of what I meant. see if I can get store credit for a month and save some money to buy the d750. So has had anyone any experience with the odd flares the d750 can get ?

Yup hold off the Atomos and go for a D750. I would say don't buy an Atomos at all with Nikon or any DSLRs, it simply doesn't make a difference in IQ. I tested and tested and there just doesn't seem to be any difference to justify the trouble of using an external recorder. Perhaps just a tiny teeny bit finer noise structure and that's it, could not see a difference between 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 even after looking for it that I am starting to believe the Nikons/Canons don't really output a 4:2:2 signal at all, just 4:2:0 wrapped in a 4:2:2 container.

The D750 recording to internal Cards is the best way to go. convenient, sharp 1080p fullframe video, and second to non stills performance. I would go as far as saying it's the best camera on the market from any manufacturer for those who want stills AND video.

The flare issue is that it starts with a little "band" at the top of the LCD in special shooting conditions with strong lights.

How acceptable it looks is purely down to you, but I personally wouldn't bother worrying about it. It doesn't look bad.

And since Nikon officially said they are aware of the problem and for users to be patient, they will probably fix it for free if they do fix it later. I hear it's a very easy fix.

That's good to know thanks! The store agreed to give me store credit for the d610 and so I think I'll be taking a close look at the d750. Thanks everyone for the input!
