Two Commercials

Here are 2 local commercials I recently shot and edited for the company I work for. We do commercial production primarily and some corporate video. I own a HVX and they rent it from me :-) They are purchasing one soon though, but no worries I got some payments out of them towards my cam. They were gonna get the Canon HDV.

Aardvark Sports Shop - This one I descided to shoot some slow-mo shots in 720p 48 frames and then I down converted it to DV since I only had one 4 gig P2 card right now. The client loved the commercial!

VBK Lawyers - This one we shot entirely in DVCpro50. This one is still not approved and done but I figured I'd give you guys a look.

The reason we don't shoot HD is because we do not insert our commercials locally in HD yet and prolly won't for awhile yet. :-( Eventually it will get there. Let me know what you think

Thanks,
John G.

That looks awesome, I thought I was watching a local channel on my comp :)

Real nice work,

I think I would shoot HD and frame for SD that way just incase you have the chance to show those commercials in HD you'll have them ready to go....

Kool!!

Good stuff on that second piece. The B&W looked really good...kind of like "Sin City". I didn't really like the first one because the motion was to blured. Looks like you should have shot it at a higher shutter speed so you could see the shoes more when the guy was running.

Yeah the B&W came out really clean, did you do it in camera or in post?

BTW- Nice work.

Thanks for you comments so far. Yes the B&W was done in Post. In after effects I just used the tint to make it B& W and crushed the Blacks alittle. The colors actually look really good too but the producer really wanted it to be B&W for dramtic effect.

~Thanks again

Good Call!

The black and white has some punch to it!

Very well written and performed as well. You did a great job capturing the children's innocence and vitality.

I like the contrast it provided with the schyster. Having him in full color is a nice way to add emphasis and attention.

The only thing I would think of reworking would be having the little girl appear in black and white again in the end.

It is a bit jarring. and anticlimactic.

Maybe just a voice over with their contact info...?

This is A+ work for sure!!!!

Nicely done. So teh BW was not originally intended?

"Respect the Feet"... haha. Is this a homage to Magnolia?

I also really like the B&W footage. Only constructive critisism I would give is that you might have used a dolly move on that lengthy shot of the lawyer guy. But that may not have been in your budget.

Great work.

Thanks for posting.

In the running clip, the way you have ended it creates a feeling that the runner is going to keep on running (which feels emotionally right), but in the intro you have him at a standing start. Because the music you have used doesn't kick in straight away but has that little intro of surrealness, I would have started with that high tree shot that comes in later (or something similar) then cut to the runner on the beat running. That way it would feel that he has been running for an unknown length of time and tie-in better with the end. Also the wide of him running to camera needs to be either slower motion or a tighter shot to keep the same temporal sense that you have created in the other shots. On the dialogue "when there's nothing between you and that hard road but a pair of shoes" you should of cut in to the close up on the start of the dialogue or even a bit before.

The voice over is good, and the music works.

Thanks again. I haven't watched the other clip yet.

New guy here...

I liked the concept behind the running spot and the color pallete - seemed to work well. I did notice some "textbook" errors in it. The line of direction was crossed several times. The first shot had the guy looking right into the camera and the "textbook" says that's a no no but, if you want a confrontational feeling that would be appropriate. Still a good spot.

Now getting really picky I wondered about the establishing shot. Looks like a slight bird's eye POV and then the rest move on to standard framing. I just wonder if the first shot should give him a little more respect by going lower shooting up or perhaps sitting with a practically empty frame (at an ant's pov) of the road and when the music bed makes that initial hit have the shoe come in to frame. Just thinking out loud...

I like the look of the HVX footage. Very interesting camera.

I really liked the beginning of the lawyer spot - my least favorite part is the actual lawyer. I guess they always look like they're hungry for more money. Anyway, nice spot.
