Twixtor Pro plug-in for Sony Vegas - working

Twixtor Pro now can be used as a Plugin in Sony Vegas 10 along with many other OFX based plugins (like those from The Foundry - Nuke). No more going to After Effects.

Here is a sample (a difficult one because of the high contrast background) without tweaking.

You also need to export this while processing with Twixtor as Sony YUV uncompressed codec and then reconvert to whatever your final encode is, mp4 etc. Other codecs may work, still experimenting. Also when processing it's important change the preview quality of the Vegas Video preview to Good (Auto).

This is awesome news for Sony Vegas users, no need to go to After effects or other hosts, you can stay in Vegas all the time.

Can you explain how this works exactly, the workflow of the whole thing, thx!

You need Sony Vegas Pro V10 and ReVision FX Twixtor 5.1.1 OFX version.
Depending on what version of windows, in XP, Twixtor folder goes into the Program Files/Common Files/OFX/Plugins

I don't have Vegas Pro 10 on my Windows 7 laptop so may be different.
In windows 7 it may have to be installed in the OFX folder in Program/Sony/Vegas10/plugins/OFX.

Twixtor must be the OFX version.

Apply like any effect in Vegas and render out to Sony YUV uncompressed. I used the default settings as i'm not familiar with Twixtor Pro parameters yet to tweak the warping so the sample i posted has artifacts on the feet and hands of the paddler. I've since slowed it 3x slower again and it's still butter smooth.

That's about all i know ATM.

Cheers R

why's it need to be exported to 10-bit? doesn't export to h.264 directly?

I can see by the project name that you had a crash at some point...

I'm only on a duel core XP machine, rendering to uncompressed was easier on it. Yes it crashed once when i tried to apply the effect to a clip that was too long (2 mins ) and ran out of memory, so had to trim it. It will export to mp4 or any other format.

great news..rambooc1,do you mind sharing your twixtor settings and also settings for vegas(did you keep project properties at 59.94 p?,did you disable resample?.and did you slow down the clip in with vegas settings at all , meaning did you keep the speed ratio at 1.00 and just added twixtor)< thanks!

Project properties as normal ie matching clip, resample enabled (made no difference on or off), Vegas speed ratio left at 1.00. All Twixtor settings were default.
All retiming is done with the pluggin.

I'm tweaking a 720p version slowed to 5% so will post that here soon.

I know this is not the most fantastic example, but the exciting part is not having to go outside of Vegas. I hate After Effects, so hard to learn.

The only limitation i've found so far is you can't render out to Cineform, Canopus HQ or Matrox codec, only the Vegas internal codecs. No big deal

This is my timeline workflow in Sony Vegas and it seems to work quite good:

1. Split and trim the clip you want to slow down
2. Right click on the clip and select "Create Subclip"
3. Make sure that Switches->Loop is enabled for the sub clip.
4. Drag out the clip so that you got 5 loops after each other
5. Drag the Twixtor FX to the clip and set the Speed % = 20
6. Render, I have just tested Sony AVC (mp4) and it works fine.
7. Enjoy your slow motion clip.

This example is for 20%, if you want 10% you need to create 10 loops of the clip, 5% = 20 loops and so on...

Cheers Rambo

Thought I would share a test using the GH2 and Vegas 10. This was shot using 720 60p, shutter speed of 1/200 or 1/250...can't remember, put on a 30p timeline and slowed the clip to 50% to match. Then, used Twixtor to speed up to 200% (normal speed) and slow down to 20%. With the train leaving the frame there was a huge amount of morphing which I reduced just by cropping the image. I tried slowing the clip down to a similar speed using just Vegas, but it was choppy framexframe movement. I like what I'm seeing, but I still need to test with more varied action to justify the $600+ price.

If anyone has any tips for reducing morphing, please let me know.

That looks nice (beside the morphing as you stated)

1. Whats the reason behind slowing it down in Vegas (did you use velocity) then speeding it then slowign it down again?

I want to try it out to. It seems like it could be real useful, just that whole 600 bucks. Thats what Ive paid for vegas..lol

I read somewhere that matching the clip to the timeline made it work better...really just playing with it to figure out what's best...

EDIT TO ADD: no, re-timed the clip in properties

FYI:
I talked to the folks at the RE:Vision booth at NAB and they are currently working with Sony to allow for a fully functional version in Vegas!
I was told should be ready soon.

Im also having an issue with morphing..im not sure if its just vegas related (because lots of twixtor AE clips i see dont have that morphing), so maybe as ZAZA stated that's why they are coming out with a vegas version ..

Some types of content are more prone to "morphing" and edge dragging than others. The more interploated frames, faster the motion, the higher probability of artifacts

Some tips on the AE Pro version to reduce these artifacts (not sure if this is available in the Vegas OFX version) are to use a high contrast alternate motion source, use forground/background mattes and track points. The manual shows you how to do this with illustrations

I thought it would be appropriate to post my sony vegas 10d and twixtor 5.1.1 slow motion results here. I was experimenting with slowing down a pin wheel that had stars and stripes on it with some interesting results. Is there a way to make twixtor work better in this instance? I like the fluidity of the slow motion in twixtor, just not the end result, you'll see...
