Twilight

A few months ago, my lady friend got into the twilight series, became and absolute fanatic, and got me to read them so she would have someone to talk with them about. Seeing as the movie was coming out later in the year, i read the first two to give myself some perspective for the film. And i am glad i did.

Not sure who's seen it, but it was probably one of the worst film's I've seen this year. The speed of the first half hour is nauseating. If i hadn't read the book, i would have had absolutely no idea what was going on.

The acting was hugely sup bar. The best acting was probably by the cast we see the least. The vampire contact lenses are hugely distracting. The camera work for the most part was decent with some very nice visual moments. But many of the effects seemed cheap.

Going into the theater, i felt like i was re visiting 7th grade, with little girls absolutely everywhere. Naturally, I felt right at home....

Anyways, I'm just frustrated with the whole experience. Especially the horrible acting by 80% of the cast.

Anyone else dare see this film?

I don't know. This looks like it is aimed at too young an audience for my tastes. And like JR said, I need more meat to my vampires.

Something I would like to see done as a live-action adaptation would be VAMPIRE HUNTER D. That would be spiffy.

Twilight is not exactly aimed at the J.R. Hudsons, it's squarely aimed at the tween & teen girl crowd. You know, the same crowd that made Titanic cross $1 billion in domestic box office. For an extraordinarily male-dominated site here I doubt it'll hold much interest as a film or as a book series, but as a cultural phenomenon it's absolutely amazing to watch how it's completely ubiquitous. There were six midnight screenings in Wilmington NC on a Thursday night, all sold out, and there were reportedly about six males spread out among all the screenings (that's about one per theater).

Twilight isn't going to be our cup of tea, but it sure seems to have hit its target market squarely as a bullseye. And even then, it's getting pretty awful ratings on IMDB (it's about a 5.3 as of right now)... Of the kids I've talked to about it, they even admit that the acting is horrible, the makeup is horrible, the music is awful, but... "It's 'Twilight' so I loved it".

I need more meat on my vamps; 30 Days of Night
Meat is good...But I need less CGI-generated oversized mouths/fangs.
When did that start? Van Helsing?
Totally unnecessary (they suck blood, they ain't carnivores)
and totally distracting
grrrrrrrr:furious3:

Edit:
Interview with the Vampire still reigns over the last 20 years...
But scariest vampire ever? Christopher poo pooing Lee

Think about that for a second, Barry. I think it IS aimed at the J. R. Hudsons...
Sorry, I'm not following you... I mean, John loves hardcore R-rated horror. "Twilight" is a Harlequin romance (without the naughty bits). That's what I mean by it not being aimed at guys like Hudson. I mean, the twilight vampires don't even attack humans, they hunt animals instead because they're "vegetarians".

Unless I'm just being dense and you're just taking a slap at Hudson's manhood? :)

Hudon's basically a 13 year old girl when it comes to Titanic. He's the movie's biggest fan. :)

Hi all,

I own property at Forks, Washington, the "locale" of Twilight, but haven't read the books, and hardly know the storyline - my granddaughter might fill me in someday.

Hope the property there has appreciated, notwithstanding vampire talk and all... It's a great place to go fishing.

Now that's a cool vampire movie.

And yes, I am a 13 year old girl at heart when it comes to Titanic.

(Runs off to rewatch The Notebook again)

And Callaghan ? I have to sneak out or say I'm going to Jenny's. I think my dad is on to us.

I've always liked the period piece ones like "Interview" and Coppola's adaptation of "Dracula."

What about sleazy grindhouse style vamp flicks?

-- From Dusk til Dawn
-- John Carpenter's Vampires

Some other good ones:

-- Near Dark
-- The Hunger (beautiful cinematography)
-- The Omega Man / I Am Legend
-- Night Watch (couldn't finish it, didn't like it, but it looked cool)
-- Planet of the Vampires (1965 Mario Bava film that was an influence on Alien)
-- Underworld (liked the first one even though it tasted like a Blade + Matrix sandwich)

The new Swedish vampire film "Let The Right One In" looks more interesting to me than "Twilight."

The thing about almost every newer vampire film is that it seems like everything has been done already with the subject. I think that could be the reason that zombies have become so popular in recent years. The vampire films were slowly fizzling out. Zombies are kinda like vampires in the sense that if they bite you, then you are infected and turn into one. Both creatures inflict a similar fear of infection as well as the loss of identity and connection to normal society. Plus, swarms of mindless zombies has always scared me more than vampires because you can't reason or bargain with them. They just keep coming, always needing to feed.

I love how before he comes crashing through the wall you hear the old-style horn. link (don't watch this if you haven't seen Lost Boys)

Don't forget, Bill from "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" is one of the vampires.

I just returned from the movie. Minor back story:

My wife was introduced to the series no more than a month ago. In less than 2 and a half weeks, she'd finished reading all 4 books (roughly 600 to 700 pages each, I believe). She's not much of an avid reader (nothing to do with editing, I promise), so this is out of the ordinary. She was in love with them. I sighed as I promised to attend with her.

After the movie was over, I promised my wife I would never attend another movie in this series on opening weekend, or within the first month of release for that matter. I figured a movie about vampires, no matter how nice or polite, could still end up cool. I was a bit off. When the main (male) character entered, all of the girls in this packed theater shrieked and clapped.

As for the movie, I knew nothing about it other than the fact that they were vampires. I knew that from my wife and the trailers. It was easy to follow, but there were some parts that felt VERY rushed. I won't go into details, but was the main male character was explaining vampirism and his family and the likes, she seemed to accepting to not have any more questions about things. It was slow to start with, but the middle was WAY too fast. The "fast walking" effect was about awful. It bothered me.

All in all, it was a chick flick, and I didn't know that going in. My wife loved it, but I wonder what she would have thought of it had she not read the books.
