Twilight Zone short: stills and video

This is my first short with the DVX, still trying to figure out how to use it. Also, I know NOTHING about lighting, unfortunately. I shot this in 24pa letterbox and used magic bullet basic and max contrast. Tell me what you think. Thanks!

EDIT: Here's the movie - http://www.samuraishampoo.com/ASO.mov - 16.9 megs. It seems to be a little choppy for some reason though, not sure why.
EDIT again: here's a much higher quality version - http://www.samuraishampoo.com/ASO_480.mov - 48 megs.

Re: Twilight Zone short - stills

Dark. Very dark. Muted colors. You definitely need more light.

There's kind of an interlaced look to a couple of those shots.

Without context, it's hard to judge composition, but several shots of a guy in a cramped room isn't all that exciting. The shot with the phone has some potential . . . some detail, some shallow depth of field, some color.

And the gun . . . I don't know if there's anything more of a cliche. I think we posted a set of DVXuser rules not long ago and put a ban on shots of young white guys with guns . . . ::)

But keep studying, keep trying, keep learning. You're doing it -- you're shooting -- and you can only get better as you keep on.

show us clips!! Windows Moviemaker is a cheap and easy way to compress vids to very small WMV files... unless you're a MACkie.....

What neosnare has yet to discover is that this particular closet not only stores junk, but junk from the Twilight Zone. ;)

Love the old ones. Remember the Martian in the diner?

Re: Twilight Zone short - stills

if this is your first time at lighting ill say not bad. I would suggest going black and white. For a few reasons.

Obivoulsy twilight zone homage.

it will help your image. Dont be so quick to drag the contrast out. Try different things. You and I are both fans of the dark but too much can kill.

peace,
steve

Yes very dark. I like the shots with the cell phone too.

Re: Twilight Zone short - stills

hey, thanks for all the comments. with any luck I'll have the full short online later today.

David Jimerson - yeah, it is really dark, it was a little lighter before i magic bulleted it, though, so i can probably work with that a little. i used 2 lights in the room, a 100 watt and 60 watt, and that's pretty much it. my lighting skills suck, that's for sure. if anyone has a suggestion on what lights i should have used, that would be great. also, about the gun, yeah I kind of agree with you, but its sort of integral to the plot so I can't really take it out now.

darkstyle8 - when i'm done rendering in a few minutes I'll post up some b/w stills and see how it looks. i originally liked color better but i could easily change my mind.

Gabe and Super_Trooper - every twilight zone is a classic! ;) except for maybe the one thats really dragged out with the pig faced people

Go buy some cheap home depot halogen work lamps and bounce off of white or gold or silver..etc...bounce cards (i.e. cheap walmart foam core) get some light in there....keep up the work...

Ha! did you run into a desk corner with the phone in your pocket! Thats my old phone with crack at the exact same place!

Re: Twilight Zone short - stills

Re: Twilight Zone short - stills

lol :D , it's the actors phone, but i'd say it was either a desk or from being dropped from a large height on to concrete. just seems like something he would do.

Kyle Sherman - thanks. i'm definitely gonna pick some of those up before i shoot anything else.

"will the real martian please stand up" episode 64- may 26th 1961!

one of my all time favorites!!! ;D

... did I ever mention that I am a HUGE twilight zone fan?

Re: Twilight Zone short - stills

Re: Twilight Zone short - stills

i like the concept of that episode, i just think it would be better if it wasn't as long. whenever the doctor is unwrapping the bandages on the girl it just takes forever. but, having said that, it still beats my twilight zone short anyday, so i probably shouldn't complain about it. ;) Twilight zone is great though, new years eve and day on the sci fi channel is just about the best two days of solid tv in the year. :D

on a side note, i just purchased some webspace so i'm hoping i'll be able to get the full short up soon, in quicktime if i can get the size down, otherwise wmv.

Re: Twilight Zone short - stills

I added a link to the movie on the first page, I'll try to get a larger version up later.

Re: Twilight Zone short: stills and video

lol, funny stuff man... you need a rod serling type character to do a naration insted of the freeze frame type on ;D

Re: Twilight Zone short: stills and video

lol, yea. i tried to do the narration myself but it sounded like crap. If you know any rod serling soundalikes, that do voiceover work, let me know. :D
