tweaking electronic optics of DVX 100A

I want to hear information about DVX 100 A users who have gotten "under the hood" of the electronic optics and have tweaked them and customized them for desired effects and asthetic preferences.

Also, can some one talk about the difference between shooting 24p standard and advanced, what's better for non-blow up to film, how does final cut pro deal with 24 p.

Thanks,
-Michael

The words "tweaked" and "DVX" should never appear in the same sentence. The level of skills required to work at a component level on a camera like the DVX is so far beyond what most hobbyist's can accomplish as to make the idea extremely ill advised.

As for your second question, the choice to shoot 24p versus 24pa would be determined by the NLE that will be used to edit the footage. If you are going to edit in a 29.97 fps time line, then shoot 24p, if you are going to edit in a 23.976 fps time line then shoot 24pa.

I am not a FCP user so I can't directly address this aspect of your question. You might want to repost this part in the FCP portion of the forum.

to my knowledge, what you are referring to is the broadcast camera "opening in a pinch" by manually tweaking different boards in the camera. I have to agree with khmuse that doing this on the DVX100A would not only be dangerous, but would completely void your warranty, and with the relatively "close quarters" inside the camera body, attempting this without a DI Engineer would be asking for trouble. Then again, I'm more of a gear head than a techie, so my experience is primarily inside film cameras.

I think we're mincing words but I'll take responsibility because I used the term "tweaking." I'll be more specific. There seems to be a lot of manipulation you can do to the camera simply through the electronic optics such as working with the "knee" the "gamma levels" etc. I'm new to digital cinematography and would like to know if anyone has experimented with these electronic controls, to what effect.
Thanks,
-Michael

The interface for adjusting the gamma on a DVX is kind of like adjusting the brightness/contrast on a TV. There is a menu, buttons, etc. There's no need to pull out a screwdriver!

Ah, sorry, we definately misunderstood each other. To answer, yes, I've played around with these options quite a bit, mostly in terms of the heel and toe manipulation to adjust the quality of the over exposed areas, and the detail level in the blacks. If you search around in the articles area, you'll find that the DVX has exceptional skills at seeing into blackness, which, for a film look, is not always preferable. Often times on projects I'll crush the black a little bit, just to give it a little bit more harsh contrast. Do you have any special looks in mind? It's easy enough just to play around with some minimal lighting and see for yourself how to obtain the results in camera. Hope this helps,
