TV Logic VFM-056 5.6" HD LCD Monitor Group Buy

Barry,

Yes, we have a 1700. I haven't seen it side by side, but my eye tells me that colorimetry is very similar to my 7" TV Logic and 17" Flanders, not the plus green of the 1700, which is closer to the AF100 LCD. I just can't believe how lightweight this thing is, and the 3D like imagery and subtle colors--and of course, amazing resolution and feature set. I just find the AF100 LCD to be too small for critical focus, so will leave it in waveform display most of the time. To be fair, Panasonic has given us a great looking LCD on the AF100, except for the plus green issue. I really don't want to ever look at our HPX170 or HPX2700 LCD again after seeing the AF100 display.

I always use an on-board monitor when shooting on a tripod, and the big, heavy Panasonic BT-LH80 is a bit silly for the AF100, especially when powered with a brick or V-mount. I'm always weary of the lower cost monitors, they always disappoint. The TV Logic seems to be offering me the best of all worlds for image, footprint, features and price.

Thanks Dino for the detailed review!

..Overall, I believe this and the Small HD to be the perfect form factor and resolution for critical focus and the colorimetry of the TV Logic looks fantastic...

Just to be sure, did you prefer the TV Logic colorimetry over the Small HD?
Thanks again for taking the time to review these!

Cheers,

Morgan

I haven't seen the two side by side yet. I hope to be able to soon, I just missed the chance with a client who owns one yesterday when he returned one of our AF100's from rental, but the TV Logic hadn't been delivered yet.

Yeah, I don't care about the difference between the TV Logic and the onboard LCD, I'm much more interested in how the TV Logic compares against the current standard, which is the LH1700 and its ilk. If it makes an image that's on par with those, it's a no-brainer.

I agree that the 1700 seems to be the defacto standard, but it's because of when it was, now how good it was. The 1700 series is plus green, flesh tones look yellow. The supposedly REC 709 calibrated Flanders Scientific and TV Logic displays look magenta by comparison. Last week, I caught myself asking my gaffer to add some minus green to Kino Flos with yellow slip over bulbs that were working as background glows in a bar scene because, of course, the yellow looked too green on the 1700. Then I looked at my TV Logic LVM-071W and realized it was unnecessary--the 1700 had fooled me because the phase wasn't in it's slightly tweaked position that I normally use.

The 1700 is the standard everyone knows and works with/around, and if the AF100's LCD matches it, then there's zero chance they would ever consider "fixing" it, so that's what I'm looking at...

Makes sense Barry. I wonder if that means they'll have to fix the EVF then?

Thanks for the info and setting up the group buy.
Just an FYI to the group, FilmTools is not the exclusive reseller for this model and other TVLogic product. If you would like to purchase the VFM-056 at this pricing from local resellers in NY such as my company, Vidkey, Inc. or other NY resellers or even elsewhere in the country, please contact me at 914-239-3232 and I will arrange for you to get your hands on this model. We can arrange this pricing for user group member and accept credit cards and other payments. Feel free to contact me for further specs, brochures and accessories available. ....David Radin

Mike, yes, I thought this seemed vaguely familiar somehow, good find. I changed the link to FilmTools because they are the reseller for the DVXUser group discount and their price was lower than the other vendor I originally linked.

A Technical issue with WFM-056WP just became known, this from the US distributor, Preco:

Yesterday afternoon we became aware of an issue with the HDMI to HD-SDI converted
output of the TV Logic VFM-056WP version. We put a 3G Tektronix WFM on the converted
output BNC and saw excessive jitter on the signal. This jitter will preclude most external
devices from locking to this signal.

Note: this same output, when used as a loop-output from the HD/SD-SDI input, is fine. It
is only when the HDMI-to-HDSDI mode is selected that the jitter becomes excessive.

We have halted shipment of the WP model until we get some feedback from the factory as to
when we can see a fix for this problem.

I apologize for this problem: we wanted to let you know right away - I hope you can publish this
on the users group.

This does not affect the WFM-056W, just the WP, but the latter is the one with scopes and the HDMI converted to HD-SDI output feature. I can verify that the HD-SDI looping works perfectly, as I just got back from a shoot looping from an AF100 via HD-SDI to the TV Logic and out to a 17" monitor. I had tested this earlier in the week, but not the HDMI to HD-SDI feauture, which is really intended for DSLR users.

I am sorry that this wasn't caught earlier and that shipments will be disrupted until firmware is available to fix the issue. I enjoyed using the monitor today, primarily in pixel to pixel mode with red peaking as well as the zoom feature, both of which made critical focus much easier than the AF100 LCD. I am confident TV Logic will address this issue as fast as possible.

Yikes! Hopefully it's just a firmware issue and I don't need to send my monitor to them for repair. Good thing we still have HD-SDI out on the camera.

Update from Preco, TV Logic US Distributor:

We have been told there is new firmware for the VFM-056WP that fixes the
HDMI-to-HDSDI converted output. The factory is sending us the update
tool we need to load firmware into the monitor(s). We may not receive this
tool until next Monday morning.

So, a solution is forthcoming. Once we get the tool and confirm the fix

we will contact Filmtools to determine the quickest way to upgrade the
units in the field.

Jeff, if you could let the user's group know this we would really appreciate it.

Thank you all for your patience, this should be resolved very soon.

TV Logic HDMI to HD-SDI Converted Output Issue Fixed

From the TV Logic master distributor in the US, Preco:

Hi Jeff:

I wanted to confirm we confirmed the fix for the HDMI-to-HDSDI converted output
for the TV Logic VFM-056WP. We are now in the process of upgrading all of the
VFM's we have in house. Can you let the user's group know?

For those that have already taken delivery of a WFM-056WP, please contact Preco in Burbank or your reseller about a free firmware upgrade. http://preco.net/ www.filmtools.com

Sorry for the inconvenience. Monitor is amazing in its feature set and image quality!

Jeff-
For those of us planning on using DSC charts, do you know whether the WP's vectorscope is software upgradeable to 2x gain at a future date? Or will we have to wait for the next version of the WP?
