TV Logic VFM-056 5.6" HD LCD Monitor Group Buy

How is it set up for power? What type of connector is there for external 12v power?

It comes with an AC power adapter. FilmTools has a Canon, Sony, and Panasonic battery plate for it. They didn't have the dual battery plate, but that wasn't a big deal for me.

They didn't have any of the other accessories that TV Logic makes for it. I bought the Hoodman H-R5.6 shade instead of waiting for the TV Logic shade. They also had the H600 shade, but when I tried that it fit kinda weird (one side was large than the other so it was oblong shaped). They opened up the H-R5.6 which is actually made for the Red LCD and it fits perfectly. You just have to stretch the elastic a little more.

Why not take a look at their website with all the details- Perhaps download the data sheet?

or perhaps this interview video?

G.

The reason I asked is that one of the web pages says 12 watts at 12 volts, while the other says 9 watts at 6 - 12 volts and the brochure says 9.6 watts at 12 volts. There was also no description that I could find of the type of connector used. Just trying to figure out the best way to power it.

And thanks to Jeff for setting this up!

The output on the AC adapter that comes with it says 12v 3.33A. The back on the panel says 6-12v 1.5-0.7A. I bought the Sony battery plate (I have some Sony batteries and chargers) and use Lenmar batteries that are equivalent of the NPF950. It looked like the Panasonic plate uses the DVX/HVX batteries, but I'm not 100% sure.

Can anyone recommend a soft pouch-type case for these LCD displays? I want to put the LCD in the Pelican case, but not bare so I can avoid scratching the screen.

This sounds like a really nice deal.
Do you know if they'll ship to Norway?

I'm still waiting for a review from a German reseller about color accuracy on
the SmallHD vs TVLogic.

Other than that, what is the main difference to this date?
TVLogic has vector scope and wave form support, but with SmallHD's
regular firmware upgrades, it's not impossible they will include that in the future.
SmallHD also seem to have a better accessory line up.

morganhn,

I don't know what FilmTools policy is on international shipping, you'd have to check with them. As far as color accuracy, all I can say is that TV Logic is a broadcast monitor manufacturer in business for 10 years, you will find their monitors in many TV stations and post facilities. I want their 15" OLED in a big way, but it's pricey!

A client of mine is using one of our AF100's tomorrow and owns a Small HD. Assuming my TV Logic arrives tomorrow, I will try to compare them side by side when he brings the camera back from his shoot. Even if they look the same color and processing wise, I'm hoping the UI suits me better on the TV Logic and it's nice to have scopes, markers, false color, embedded audio and TC displays out of the box, which is not to say that Small HD won't address scopes and such at a later time with firmware.

Mike@AF,

Small HD offers a neoprene sleeve for $19.00.

Our TV Logic VFM-056WP arrived this evening. So far I'm very impressed. I prefer the UI over the Small HD version menu layout wise, it has a ton of features, it's unbelievably light weight, resolution is amazing, colorimetry looks very accurate, no banding or scaling artifacts noticeable. It really shows how inaccurate the AF100 LCD display is. I really like the five position pixel to pixel mode, the 90% zoom in 10% increments, variable markers in aspect ratio, color and thickness. Waveform had Y, R and B display options with opaque or translucent back. Vector has two colors, one for scale, one for signal. TC and audio levels are shown at the top, outside of active picture if in zero display vs. overscan. Focus in red can be other colors and sensitivity percentages. This is just scratching the surface of the capabilities of this monitor.

The Panasonic battery bracket is NOT compatible with AF100/HMC150 batteries, it's made for HVX200/HPX170 type batteries. I also got the sun shade and acrylic protection cover, which is good for rental environments, but too shiny for exteriors.

Overall, I believe this and the Small HD to be the perfect form factor and resolution for critical focus and the colorimetry of the TV Logic looks fantastic. This monitor does just about everything(and more in some cases) that our $2500 7" TV Logic does for $1350 with the DVXUser member discount at FilmTools. I really believe it's worth the extra money vs. other small monitor in image quality and features, it really holds it's own against monitors costing much more money. Our rental clients are going to love this little display!

Can you explain how the 5 position pixel to pixel mode works? How is this different from the 90% - 10% zoom function?

And thanks for the informative post!

No 2x gain for vectorscope. I have made it clear to the factory via the US distributor that AF100/HMC150 battery bracket and vectorscope expansion are needed, in that order.

TV Logic was lobbied to do the HDMI to HS SDI loop(720P only) by DSLR users

Thanks for the informative rundown on the unit Dino.

Since you have experience with TV Logic in getting them to listen to adjusting features in the firmware, what do you think the likelihood of them adding the 2x gain feature to vectorscope imaging data and did you get a sense of how long they would take to implement this change (assuming they are willing to do it)?

Thanks for all your effort on setting up this deal and relaying your experiences here.

I've been considering the SmallHD for its rugged casing, powering options, and accessories. I want to use the monitor with my 7D also. Would the SmallHD Canon battery plate fit/work with the TV Logic? What about the SmallHD proprietary "slim" batteries and bracket?

Chris,

It's a 1:1 pixel to pixel mode that allows you to select quadrants or center, zoom is more precise, allowing 10% increments and separate width and height control to zoom to any are of the raster. They both look very clean because the pixel count of the panel is so high. The zoom adjustments really lend themselves to the turn and push wheel, same as found on the rear of the AF100. I find when I'm shooting an interview and have talent at one side of frame or another, invariably, the quadrant pixel to pixel position is not quite positioned where I need it. If you have the time to set it precisely, the zoom with shift controls gives you exactly the expansion and positioning you want.

I really don't know what kind of time line we're talking about. I kept telling the US distributor that Flanders Scientific did this for me(the owner of Flanders used to be the TV Logic US distributor) just to light a fire. I know that TV Logic is very good about coming out with new features. My 7" TV Logic didn't have focus in red or quadrant controlled pixel to pixel originally, but was addressed a few months later with firmware. And they have refined the scopes a couple of times over time.

TV Logic offers a Canon, Sony and Panasonic battery bracket, not to mention AA back/holder. I don't know if the plate screw holes line up between the two brands, nor if the Small HD proprietary slim battery would work. It's certainly possible. The bracket I have is a single Panasonic holder, not dual. I like the idea of the slim Small HD battery, but am not a fan of low volume proprietary battery housings.
