TV Logic 5.6 question...

Greetings everyone, I hope you are having very productive summer. I'm planning to buy Tv Logic 5.6 pro version monitor and I've got some question that people who used it with FS100 might answer. How well does it work with Sony FS100? Is there anything I should be concerned before purchasing? Does waveform, vectorscope, and all other features work properly with Sony FS100? Can I power it thru this power station http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251055479861&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:US:3160 ? What is your overall opinion on this monitor? I was using smallhd dp6 and I just want to step up to tv logic due to some features that smallhd does not have yet (don't get me wrong smallhd dp6 is great monitor). I know that questions probably seem stupid but it will really help for my final decision. Thanks in advance, any advise is really appreciated.

I use my Tvlogic 5.6" with my FS100 and it works well. Nothing really of note to worry about. I have issues on that monitor with HDMI input from my Scarlet, and generally I find the TVlogic 5.6" does not have that bright of a backlight, but overall it is quite a nice monitor and the HDMI-SDI conversion is a nice addon for the FS100 which otherwise only supports HDMI output.

That power station should work, definitely with the 12v output. I use a similar battery plate to power mine, or I use 12V li-ion batteries I got on ebay that have a level indicator that work well for keeping the monitor autonomous rather than powered from a shared power source on a camera rig.

@nyvz

Thanks, it helps a lot. I would say that hdmi to sdi conversion was one of the features that I really like about this monitor. Also you said you have got some problems with Scarlet. What was it? and Have you used it with epic?

I might suggest you check out the Marshall V-LCD70MD... it's got everything the TVLogic has and more. It's brighter, it's a modular build, so you can upgrade it as you go along. Comes it 3 builds at the moment:
- V-LCD70MD
- V-LCD70MD-O
- V-LCD70MD-3G

The O version could most likely be used as a hdmi > sdi converter so you could stick the Samurai behind it without that add-on thingy.

Oh, it's 7" instead of 5.6" of the TVLogic. The price for the two is roughly the same...

Atleast that is the monitor I'm eye balling at the moment. Some retailers have it already.

Core speccs:
  • High Resolution 1024 x 600 LED Backlit IPS panel
  • High Brightness 800-nit with Adjustable Backlight
  • Available in three Configurations:
    • V-LCD70MD (No Module)
    • V-LCD70MD-O (3G Output Module with two 3G-HDSDI outputs converted from the HDMI input. HDCP Compliant)
    • V-LCD70MD-3G (3G Input Module with loop-through)
  • DSLR Ratio Adjustment with 4 DSLR Ratio Presets
  • On Screen Waveform / Stereo Audio Bar Display
  • Manual Gamma Adjustment
  • Adjustable IRE Clip Guide (Zebra Filter)
  • 1/4"-20 mounts on all sides
  • Stereo Headphone Output (select a L+R Pair from the available channels)
  • 6 Monitor Configuration User Presets
  • Custom Screen Markers (choice of four colors and variable lines widths)

I would think the V-LCD56MD is a better match for someone looking at the TVlogic.

In my opinion 7" is a bit large for an on camera monitor, and I dont know why someone would buy a 1024x600 7" monitor when they can get a 1280x800 5.6" monitor for around the same price.

I was considering that monitor too, or better to say I was deciding between them. The only problem is that its new monitor and not so many people used it (I mean 5.6 Marshall). Tv logic monitors have been used for a years and pros around the world really like them. I think this new Marshall monitor is one of few Marshall moniotrs that gets good reviews, most of them I've heard are not so good.

I got the TVLogic and love it - the only annoying thing is, that you can't do firmeware upgrades by yourself.
But if I would have to buy an other monitor today, I would pick the Marshall.
And I don't think 7" is to big, would love to have more real estate.

Really? Will I have to send it to them for an upgrade? And how often do they make firmware upgrades? Also did you use marshall monitor 5.6 model?

Back when I had the DP1x it was way too big for my taste. I'd be doing handheld shots in the passenger seats of a sportscar quite often and could feel my eyes crossing due to how close i would have to keep the monitor to my eyes.

Yes but more real estate with less resolution??

I got my TVlogic firmware updated a few months ago hoping it would fix the issue with the Scarlet HDMI. I was able to get it done for the cost of shipping to and from the closest TVlogic vendor that could do updates. Still cost ~$30 in the end and didnt fix the issue. No matter what mode and no matter what firmware on the TVlogic or Scarlet, the screen goes black for exactly 20 seconds every time it has to reconnect with the HDMI. None of the other changes to the firmware seem to make much difference in my regular shooting except once I used the monitor with a Canon DSLR and it scaled properly using the DSLR SCALE mode that previously did not work right with certain DSLRs.

Do marshall monitors have user-upgradable firmwares? I've only heard of that in SmallHD's, which have their own downsides. 7" may not be too big but I got a DP4-EVF 4.3" monitor since I started feeling like my TVlogic 5.6" was a bit bulky. I mean when you consider how small some cameras are, monitors start seeming very big and bulky. The DP4 is way brighter than the TVLogic, which is nice.

So you're digging the DP4? I still have a DP1x but it feels too bulky more and more often. I like the idea of the DP4 with the flip down EVF, but I'm not so sure about the lower resolution.

I guess you have to consider also what and how you are shooting. I can imagine been on shoulder an entire day, that the 7" would start to feel or just look heavy. But if you are on sticks most of the time, I would prefer a larger monitor any time.

Unfortunately noone here in DK has it yet, so I can't even have a peak at it, but on paper, I think it sounds fine. If the peaking works as it should, the little bit less resolution wont matter to me. Just gotta find that sweet spot where you learn that the image is sharp where you want it to be.

Also, when checking footage, it would be nice to be able to back a foot off from the monitor instead of having 2-3 people cuddled up in front of a smallish monitor :D

For shoulder I'd love to try out the new TVLogic EVF, it's just damn pricey :O

In controlled situations on set, I often have a additional 24" monitor hooked up to judge framing and all.
The TVLogic is mostly used by my focus puller.
