.tv domain names

Why are .tv domains so expensive? At 1and1 .tv domains are 4x the price of .com's.

Is this a supply and demand thing?

A harbinger of web 3.0?
 
Pretty much, but the base price is decided by ICANN

You should try getting a .travel, they start at 300 a piece.
 
The story of .TV is pretty cool. I think someone effectively bought out the entire country's right to their extension and that is part of why it is so much more to have one of their domains.

Everyone (about 11,000 souls) who live on the tiny island country of Tuvalu got a monster payday when the $50M deal finally went through.

Okay so one company has exclusive rights to .tv? And they charge what they want?
 
I just recently had the idea of getting the extension for the Turks and Caicos Islands...

I could have had http://www.iam.tc

But somebody JUST registered it less than a month ago. Ya snooze, ya loose I suppose.

Ouch, that sucks, that would have been an awsome domain.

But it does give me an idea... Hmm..

Wikipedia says: "Malawi" .. no kidding... hmm...


EDIT: A hundred bucks? mehhh, never mind. I've allready got my .com

LOL!! :grin:

So I looked up ".me" on wikipedia...

It belongs to Montenegro, which used to be part of Serbia and Montenegro, which used to be Yugoslavia. And their domain was .yu


so it's gone from .yu to .me :)


EDIT: my friend just asked what your site would be if it use to be "www.f.yu" :laugh:
